  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SWAP-Pack for RED

One would think the batteries would be wired in parallel.

The question shoudn't be of a simple parallel connection as the batteries should not charge each other under any conditions. This meant the batteries should have equal charge and should be of the same type. For some background, see for instance the webpages by Cadex http://batteryuniversity.com/partone-24.htm

Brian, is it a mosfet-solution inside the unit?

Was not planing on putting any electronics in the pack - will check the posibility to-do so, however using two lithium batteries in parallel without special electronics has been very common for years with camera stabilizers.

are the battery plates included or do we have to pruchase two of them, and then attach your tool?
/ i am a little confused because not knowing what is included and what not.

-Set up "ready-to-shoot", so you get it with the V-Mount battery plates.
-Other plates on request (might cost a little extra:innocent:

While very pretty, why spend $590 when you can achieve the same for $155 with the batteries4broadcast.com GT-TS (actually Switronix):

edit: Vince just beat me to the punch.

I have used this in the past on Varicam and just received mine yesterday. Solid build. Snaps onto the existing RED battery plate.

Michael, I know the Red batteries carry extra info of remaining battery life. How does this work if you have two on there, or if you have one on and then put on a new one and take the old one off? I'd love it if you could do a little test with this.

if you use something like this, do you have to pay attention to the battery life and then "make the switch" when one is about to die? or do you just put two batteries on it and when one dies the next starts up automatically and you dont have to think about it?

Shawn, when I get RED #414, I'll put it through its paces and let you know.

Vince, data from v-lock batteries is an industry standard and the GT-TS has the same extra pins I've seen elsewhere. We'll see whether RED is supporting the standard. :-)

A live swap of a battery is nothing new.

Shawn - are you showing remaining battery life on Build 13 with your batteries? All my batteries display "AC" - I assumed it was a firmware bug ..?

Mark - My camera, number 216 with Build 13, is showing remaining battery life.

Update. Unfortunately the batteries4broadcast bricks do not currently work with RED. Well, they sorta do. With the dual v mount adapter they run the cam no prob. So if you need a big brick to run your cam for longer periods (doc work) it's an option. But solo, nogo. Camera will try to boot but doesn't get there.

RED bricks and the Swap Pack are looking pretty good right about now.

What size are you using?

Whoops! Sorry Mark for not replying. My battery meters are fine

Swap-Pack update

Swap-Pack update

There have been some requests for features of the SWAP-pack, that I now am looking into, so final shipping of the first units is still a few weeks away:

-SWAP-pack can be flipped away, so you can easily access you RED controls

-SWAP-pack can be used with the RED-edition ActionCam

-SWAP-pack can mount on 15mm rods (option)

-optional power connectors can be added to the SWAP-pack

-a mount for the RED raid can be attached to the SWAP-pack

-I plan on integrating a small hi-power batterie to jump in during batterie swaps - test is next week, if this work fine, then SWAP-pack will only have one batterie mount as a standard.

As a spin-off product, there might be a small "Boot-Buddy" utility, that plugs in to the power tap of the RED batterie mount - for those who would like to keep using there existing RED cradle but want to skip reboots:)

Final infos in about a week
