  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Surprise...

Very well. Professional encoders suck, then.

Why? Blu-ray still produces the highest quality video in the home today.

A common problem with comparing still images with a perceptually lossless codec is the encoded frame type. If one codec happens to be an I frame and the other a B frame, is it fair? Bs are quantized higher than other frame types to save bits. Visually they will look worse.

The trick to compression is you are supposed to watch it playing in realtime. :) A lot of stuff is done to save bits when you should not be able to see. e.g. high motion. If something is a blur on screen, this is a great place for the encoder to save bits. A talking head is a place where you may want to spend more bits because the viewer can focus.

A-titles are getting lower bitrates than smaller films because of extras. Disney, for example, will use an average rate of 20 Mbps with a peak of 30 Mbps for the video. The lossless audio and PiP and extras are taking up the rest.

Sorry for going off topic. I really enjoyed the reel. It does show that I have a long way to go in producing better images.

Grading & Framing

Grading & Framing

Our shots weren't graded or framed right... but it still looked great!

EDIT: Nor were we credited... oh well.

Cail-
I sincerely apologize for missing you in the credits. I caught this last week-but only after we mastered the Reel for NAB. We are in the process of amending the credits and replacing the online version.

As for framing and grading - we needed to work with the reel in 1:78, so we kept all the shots full aperture and did our best to grade them in context with the rest of the reel.

best,
michael

Seems to me that anyone who uses the word "FanBoy" lacks the skills to make a good argument. Envy seems to be the underlying theme in Erik's posts. And to think he won't use his real name...

There will always be people like this out there. No worries. Let them think what they want - don't waste anymore time on it.

Congrats, RED Team, on a great achievement. If this is just a demo, I can't wait for the finished product! :-)

im sad

I can help you out with that... There. Done.
Thank you, Jeff.
In the four years I have been reading posts on DVXuser and the Red and Scarlet user, I have never encountered a more annoying, uninformed person talking out of his ass than this guy.

I was there at the Vegas event and I was completely impressed by the RedRay reel. Really astounding!

Oh. And to you, Eric: (excuse the grammar... never translates well) Auf Wiedersehen, Herr Ponti. Ihre Mutter war ein Hamster und Ihr Vater, die von den Holunderbeeren gerochen wurden.

Cheers.

I've watched the reel several times now. very inspirational stuff! nice to know that this quality is within reach of many of us now. congratulations to everyone whose clips were included and to all the others that have shot great things on the Red.

Big Mike.. it was great to see you again.. its been awhile.

To the Parents of Jimmy (James) Jannard,

It has come to the attention of the administration that your son has been overly social and disruptive in class. While we do understand that boys will be boys we became increasingly concerned when your son Jim announced one day in class he was going to make a camera. The other children started to tease Jim and taunt him, and the teacher did her best to control this behavior but it continued causing undue chaos and resentment. Unfortunately after being spoken to in the hall, Jim did little to resolve this issue and take back his childish claim. We sought diligently to persuade little Jim that these fantasies, while normal, can have a negative effect upon his development and good standing in the classroom. Nevertheless your son James persisted and grew increasingly stubborn and resolute about his claim. I understand that, while he did keep up on his school assignments, Jim and a few of his friends [those he tricked into participating in this scheme] were staying up well past their bedtime working on this project in their clubhouse.

The day Jim annouced the camera was ready the class still laughed and it is reported this made Jim even madder. It's true Mr. & Mrs. Jannard, your son James did make a camera, but the project was and still is outside the accepted boundaries of this administrations policies and principles. Given his obstinate demeamnor and his obsessive focus we decided to look into this matter more closely.

As a result of this recent photographic display of Jim's unauthorized project we have decided to drop the pending detention charges and remove the bad behavior marks, but we expect Jim to no longer pursue this project and return to his former status as a respectful and well minded student who will accept authority and obey the established order.

It is with my full confidence in your acceptance of this practical resolution that this matter be put to rest and that this matter shall be deemed resolved with your full cooperation.

Sincerely,

Mr. Sony Kodak
Superintendent of Compliance and Submission.

This was brilliant, 10s!

I just have to say...Wow. even in 720p looks great. I've yet make a mp4. version to play on PS3 on my Pioneer Elite 50 TV. But I did notice when using QT Pro, I didn't get the "pass through" on the audio bit like the video that was posted here. I can "P thorough" on video but not on audio - just gives me the option AAC. What's up with that?

The pass through selections when importing from QT Pro are for MPEG-4 compressions only, both audio and video. Jarred (or somebody else) chose to use AIFF for the audio.
Go ahead and re-encode the audio to AAC, that newly created MP4-wrapped QT will play perfectly fine now on your PS3.
