I wonder if you could put epic firmware into little scarlet and make it a super scarlet? not something you wanna be trying at home!
Be cool if it did tho! :emote_head_explode:

Yeh i know its ridiculous.. that's the hangover mind at work! maybe it would make a wierd hybrid of both. Eplet..Scaric !
Booze! never again!

well ... that's the most slept on conspiracy theory anyways: Scarlet IS an Epic. The Production of an Epic costs around 4000$. RED sells them for 37'000 and makes some good money. Now the RED people all like to ride the New Porsche Cayenne. So they thought ... Let's release the Epics under the Name of Scarlet-x, paint them grey and tell everybody the chip was slower (when in fact the Epics are slowed down via Firmware) Now instead of 33 Grand they just earn 6 Grand per Camera, but now RED can milk the huge market of Indie-Filmmakers too.

Plausible innit? :biggrinjester:

I'm not saying that a Scarlet is an Epic but from my knowledge in computers and hardware I do know that the parts that don't pass Epics quality bar will be at varying degrees. So some will just miss the mark and some will be way off the mark. I predict that some Scarlets will be capable of more than what the firmware allows because when Red created the Firmware they set its limits based on lowest quality bar of its hardware. So in theory SOME Scarlets may be capable of more than others....Just speculation of course :)

I've wondered about this too. These chips were initially set up to support an Epic right? Yes what the Epic does is very impressive from the Framerates to Data rates, but if it was initially for Epic then passed down to Scarlet I have to think they have a bit more in them then we're currently being offered. I could be crazy, just a thought. The Scarlet is 1/4 of the Epic S at nearly the same price. Is it that hard to believe these chips are already maxed out if they were intended for Epic. Maybe they are I don't know enough. Hopefully we'll get a surprise update :)

Well there's only one way to find out, start hacking.

Isn't 99.9% of everything being shot around the world as I type this "indie?". There must be 500 things being shot this second. Are the handful of major studios Paying for all of them? No, maybe 5 of them.

RED has stated that the Epic has very powerful, expensive chips that help it reach the data throughput 5k @120fps requires. Scarlet is lacking these so even if somehow a Scarlet got an Epic level ASIC it wouldn't have the extra hardware to take advantage of it.

I overclock my home computer about 30% .
The scarlet is mostly a computer.

he he he ... liquid cooling ... and some of those fancy dark-blue LED-mods ;-)

But to be honest ... those high framerates are overused already ... every youtube-search with the keyword "epic" returns countless "i-don't-have-a-story-to-tell-but-some-cool-slomo-shots-to-show-off"-Movies - it feels like back in the days when the first affordable Lexicon-Reverbs entered the Musicbusiness ... all the Songs we're drowned in Reverb. These people should carefully watch movies like Legend of the Guardians or Matrix to see how slomo i used wisely to tell the story. Lets hand over the rest of the slomo-fetish to the sports-broadcasters.
Considering this, I'm all cool with my Scarlet @ 24fps ;-)

And after all: Slomo that seperates the boys from the men comes out of a Phantom Flex or a Weisscam HS2 anyway ;-)

I am satisfied with the 4K capabilities of Scarlet and I imagine most other Scarlet users are as well since many was intending to buy a 3K camera.
If it did 120FPS it would be perfect, but I rarely have use for it and don´t mind renting an Epic for those occasions.

I muchly concur!

I too qm coin with what Scarlet has to offer. I'm curious if we will see HDRx 24fps at 4k. Much of my interest in purchasing an Epic is for 5k and HDRx at speed.

I think the advances in the current Scarlet will almost certainly be in HDRx@24p 4k.. I think this has already been suggested. I'd love to see a usable framerate at 5k - who wouldnt - but I just don't think it'll happen.
Having shot lots with my Scarlet, I'm very satisfied with it, if I have a need for anything more on a shoot I'll just rent an Epic (never really been one for super-slow mo, but you never know what a client might ask for one day)
