Hey guys, I am curious to learn more about vista vision and what existing s35mm lenses will carry over into full frame land.

I'm aware of the arri illumination guide tool and CVP's tool but I am interested in what those s35mmm lenses that happen to cover ff are going to be doing in the corners of the frame that they weren't originally designed to cover. It seems most s35mm lenses that are 75mm or longer will cover but will they be useable or is there a downside?

For anyone curious here are the tools mentioned above:

You are generally correct about a lot of 75 and really 85mm and up glass covering FF35 and VistaVision. There's even some oddities that cover wider.

Remember lenses are designed for a specific image circle, so even though they cover you will often see a fair amount of quality drop as you get outside of the format that the lens was originally intended for. Which also likely means more aberrations, less resolving power, likely more distortion, and likely weird flare related stuff.

Thanks Phil.

I guess the area that i’m most curious about would be comparing similar lenses that were created for s35 versus ff like a 100mm cooke s4 versus a 100mm cooke s7. I’ll try and post some screen grabs once i get some time to do some tests at a rental house.

Generally you'll notice the biggest differences happen in the bokeh and it's curved nature versus flat. You'll see more cats eye, which people either love or hate.
