Okay, so I am right in the midst of a lighting/Red test and Red starts doing something I've never seen before. The LCD drops to like 4 frames a second (guess), extremely juttery. This persists through a reboot. My settings are:
-Build 14
-4k 2:1 Redcode 36
-Compact Flash, empty and freshly formatted

Thoughts? I was about to record, so help in the next 15 min is appreciated! :-)

I haven't seen this...try unplug everything and reboot ?

Goto Maintenance and Clear out all the settings to default. Reboot, if that doesnt work, try installing the build over itself again.

Let me know if that helps you.

Okay Jarred, I just restored and rebooted. I figured out what was causing it. My system is rejecting 4k 2:1, Recode 36 to Compact Flash as an invalid setting. Why is this? If I put it into Redcode 28 everything goes back to normal.

It demonstrates how close we are to the edge of CF speed. You have an older RED CF card? That might be the problem. Try all of them. Some of the original ones work and some do not it seems with REDCODE 36 and 4K. I had one of six give me the same error message.

The CF speed issue isn't a fabricated one so we can sell cards. The manufacturers definitely have issues with matching their specs...

There is no issue with REDCODE 36 and 4K to RED Drives or RED Flash Drives.

Jim

great to see you got it working again.. Do you have a Hard Drive yet Shawn?

I take it this is a problem specific only to CF Cards? Red Drive not an issue right?

Can't wait for improvements to CF speeds. I'm sure you guys are anxious for that too Jim.

Steve

Yeah The RED DRIVE and the RED FLASH DRIVE both can handle REDCODE 36 without issue.. as they have much higher write speeds.

red flash drive ????

Oh that sucks! I own 10 Red CFs, I'm not sure which this one is. So should we go through them all and 'certify' them ourselves for which are the faster ones?

Yes I do, unpacking it now...

great news... hook that bad boy up and throw it into REDCODE 36 and make sure everything's rolling smooth.

All RED CF cards will work with 3K to about 50fps with REDCODE 36...

Shawn, how cool is it that you just got tech support on a Sunday night?

Man, this is pretty remarkable stuff. Don't know how long you guys can keep this up, but jeesh, ask and you shall receive.

Shawn, I am missing something here - what is the difference between Redcode 36 and 28?

Lim

REDCODE 36 is a higher image quality setting and has a higher bitrate.

Sweet! Thanks Jim & Jarred. Got my tests, playback looked great! I really appreciate the prompt responses.

One more question if I may, what's the power req for the DC plugin into the RedDrive? The power cord I left at my dad's and I think I have a DC plug that will work so I can grab the files off the drive, but I couldn't find the volts/amps required written anywhere, usually they are printed on the device.

The DC adapter isn't required with FW800. I assume it's not needed for FW400 either, but I haven't tested it. USB [mini B] doesn't carry enough power, so I suspect that's what the DC adapter is for.

Try an 800 cable... should work no problem.

DC plug is for hooking up to your system to offload.. on both USB and Firewire 400 and 800 ( sorry brook )

you might "get away" with firewire 800 or 400 if you have nothing else plugged into those ports or your ports send a healthy current (mac pro towers are pretty good, and the Macbook pros can pull it off) ... but its better to plug them in if you can.

Its a RAID with the SATA drive port, so it is more power hungry than normal Bus powered drives.

Camera however you dont need the adapter at all.. the camera powers it just fine all by itself :)

Lim,
You will essentially get fewer compression artifacts in the blacks, more information in hues. It's very tough to tell the difference IMHO even when pushing the image pretty hard. (all this based on some testing)

So if you are having throughput issues with your media then wise man say Redcode28 serve you well.
