  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Strange Red one without SN on ebay

RED ONES on eBay are very interesting, most never sell and some as I found out are scams. I won an auction for $3700 for a RED ONE only to find out that the eBay user's account had been broken into and made a fake auction. I got worried about it almost after winning because I did a searched and found the exact same camera for sell with the same listing a couple years ago with the exact same pictures and hours listed. After going back and fourth for 3 weeks with eBay and paypal I got a refund, happily I found another RED One MX here and the purchase went great. I've seen the camera posted in this thread on eBay for the last couple months and it hasn't sold.
 
To be clear, not all RED ONE MX's are scams or stolen. I recently bought a RED ONE MX off Ebay from a guy for 2400. It had minor sensor damage and the seller had another R1MX that was in perfect condition running Build31 and i met with him in person and exchanged the bodies for an additional $600. There are honest people on ebay selling R1 gear, so if you are looking for one, just do your research before you bid/buy.

I agree that not all are scams and I've bought several accessories for mine on eBay, but I do follow the red one listings there and have for several months. just out of curiosity what research do you feel should be done first? I've purchased close to 400 items on eBay since 2000 and the R1 was the first time I was scammed. I contacted the seller before bidding and they seemed to be educated on the camera and they had plenty of positive feedback. I didn't bid until the end of the auction and didn't think I would win.

The camera I bought here was another story, I was able to do plenty of research on the seller and the seller was able to research me as well which was good because my camera came from South Africa to California.

I guess I've been looking for an opportunity to tell my ebay R1 story here but I'm not trying to bash eBay in any way It's one of my favorite ways to shop.
 
I've seen scams on both ebay and reduser, so I think you have to pay attention to the red flags as is this case:
A camera without SN where the seller can not reach the last owner is a clear sign that something may not be right.
 
I have built my whole system through ebay; R1 MX, Birger mount, lenses, steadicam, shoulder rig, etc.......and always got a very good price, but even been an ebay son, I know it is always a risk, I have seen so many scams on ebay during the last two years specially in R1 cameras that I am not sure if I could take that risk again for a camera body, I was very lucky, never an issue, and my recommendation is always to look closely your seller feedback, ask him a lot of questions, and see if you get a direct answer in short time, scamers doubt when you ask tricky questions, so you can identified most of the time a real seller after a few interactions, but anyway you are just reducing the risk so always be very careful, and always pay everything through ebay platform, if a seller ask you to pay using other method, that is a big RED flag to stop the transaction.
 
Funny...my first RED ONE was a scam,a month ago or so, I won an auction for a RED ONE for 1750 USD...sent payment but, I had that feeling that something was not that good at all...so I started to investigate, and somehow I managed to discover that the photos were from another auction , I contacted the seller from that auction that happened some months ago, he saw the pictures, the seller contacted me telling me he sent a package to my address but of course..everything was a scam...I documented every thing and within a week I got my money back from eBay, they helped me a lot to get things solved.

Then I saw a Red One Mx with 530 hours...from another well rated seller...so I offered a lot less than what he asked..at the end, I got it for 2,250 as he was willing to sell it and the camera arrived, in great shape...it has been working these days without a problem and the seller was always in touch and willing to help...
So the chances are that...you can find great opportunities online, I have even been given for free a Mole Richardson 412 2k junior fixture for a mistake the seller made and compensate me with an extra light....or another for just 25 bucks and in a like new condition...because nobody wanted the light because it didn't had the fresnel lens, but after the auction the seller offered me for free two fresnel lenses he had from another fixtures...

its just about paying attention to all details and choosing the right person to buy from.
 
Scams are all over the place unfortunately, I bought a Red One MX off ebay a few years ago, everything was smooth.
You've just gotta know what to look for when buying online... Red flags are easy to pick up on
