  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

STORM by The Foundry

Uh... Why are people going nuts over a $3K monitor with a built-in USB to VGA converter? WTF? Overpriced... Way overpriced.

Why not use a small conventional HD monitor for under $1K and then just connect it right to the DVI or DisplayPort connector on your system? SmallHD has both 5.6" and 8.9" monitors, 1280x800 and 1280x768 respectively. Both connect via HDMI port and can be driven with a DVI to HDMI cable or DisplayPort to HDMI cable/adapter. Several others on the market too..

Wait, what's that? You already have a second monitor occupying your DVI or DisplayPort connector on your MBP? No problem. USB2 to DVI video adapters to add another display are around $100. USB2 to VGA can be had for $50.

Sorry if I come off a bit rude, but I don't see the point in spending a $2K premium on a monitor just because it has a $100 video converter built in. And no other connectivity options, apparently.

Huh? It's only $150 street price.

Jeff, read Katu post again, he said it cost $150! (and replaces a $3000 hardware scope)

Nevermind... I'm a dumbass.

Yeah, I'd buy a couple of those monitors. :)

Multi Core Advantage??

Multi Core Advantage??

Storm does seem to be a fabulous new way to work with RED footage. Can't wait to give it a try!

One question - I am soon to upgrade to a new Mac Pro and I wonder if the folks at the Foundry would be so kind as to tell me if I'll get anyone notable performance boost by increasing the number of cores in the Mac I purchase. There is a bit of a price hit to go from 4 to 6 to 8 to 12 and I am wondering if it is worth it. It seems (though I may be wrong) that a lot of software really doesn't take advantage of the multiple cores (at least past a couple) and I am wondering if Storm will break out of that pattern.

Thanks.

So far all the Foundry's SW I have been using (NUKE especially) are using ALL cores on our machines. While I can get a real-time performance on my MBP in practical UI, I am sure You will benefit from more CPU's (cores)...

Peter

Hi Peter, I thought you mentioned putting up your demo that you captured a couple of days ago. Are they available for viewing? Lim

Thanks, Peter. So far that is the first compelling reason I have seen to bump up to at least the 8 core machine.

However, if you have a budget, I'd do a math for 8 core and RR instead of paying the difference for upgrading 12 core.

another niche for Kaku, who is everywhere already! always grateful for what he brings to our conversations.

Okay, maybe I can help you guys for group purchasing or something.

Thanks, Kaku. Yes, I am thinking 12 core may be overkill and the sweet spot is 8. And I'd love the thought of a Rocket going forward.

But first, the new Mac Pro...

Terry,

I'd spend the money on RR, Cuda compatible GPU and 6G internal RAID.

Might be a silly question to ask at this point in time but will Storm support other formats besides .R3D when it is released? It really looks good enough as is to replace some apps as a solid editing platform. Especially people not doing really hardcore work. So damn happy that RED is working so closely with The Foundry on all this different stuff, and vice-versa.

That monitor looks great for the price, definitely interesting myself. Hopefully Mr. Nasce will put together a nice 3-way CC iPad app like the one he is working on for Nuke :D BTW - Anyone know the state of using the iPad as display through USB or Bonjour networking?

Peter: Does that display need some sort of driver installed? Does it just show up as any other display would in OS X?

I found them in amazon for 17000 yen the cheapest for 10.1 inch, but unfortunately the seller don't ship abroad.

8 inche models are super cheap now. Around 8000 yen.

They all use the same software driver, so should work the same way.

Also there are touch panel versions but haven't try those, yet.

I'd second the suggestion by Kaku Ito: go for RAM, GPU and maybe RR first before paying the massive upgrade to 12 CPUs. Intel is charging really high for them, it's not Apple's fault. On the contrary, if you try to configure a similar PC, Apple is not really as expensive as many think. Only standard PCs are cheap due to high volume.

8 core Nehalems seems to be the sweet spot right now. Give them at least 2 GB per core and a CUDA capable GPU if you plan on CS5. Storm seems to be GPU agnostic according to what I learned at IBC, they'll be fine with either ATI or NVidia.

BTW, I'd join a group buy.
