  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

STORM by The Foundry

For those not at IBC the tag team demo/preso Ted and Peter are giving is leaving people WOW'd the booth has been filled for Storm(and all the other Foundry technology).
You would have to be here to really appreciate Peter's excitement (as my own) for Storm during his walkthrough.
What the Foundry has done in such a short time is nothing short of amazing. Having been a Nuke beta/user if you have not had the pleasure to work with the Foundry or the products you are all in for a ride.

Storm has so many aspects to it for an application built from the ground up by people who understand workflows, listening to users then applying that into the apps they build. The feature list even pre version 1 is something to get excited about . If you can imagine other then RED a company opening up a public beta with no restrictions and wanting your feedback just does not happen as much as it should.

Tom, can you view R3D files in Adobe Bridge CS5?

No. I am hoping that Adobe will integrate R3D file browsing into Bridge soon. That would be awesome. Right now, PC users are kind of up the creek when it comes to browsing and managing R3D files.

Storm sounds super awesome to me. I just hope PC support will come quickly.

Peter, let them know that there is a growing army of PC-based Red shooters. :sifone:

Oh and by the way, is there any chance that STORM could incorporate a RAW "Grad ND" filter like Adobe Camera RAW? My suggestion would be to add a post Grad ND function, but make the horizon grad so you can couture it to horizons. Right now ACR only allows straight edges on their RAW Grad ND.

Tom, you should contact the author of this tool and get an updated version: http://arenafilm.hu/alsog/redshellext/

He has a plugin for virtualdub, AVISynth, and the Windows shell. I think the shell extension, which is the link above, is what you are looking for. It allows you to view the R3Ds in explorer.

I often use the virutaldub plugin to quickly view files. I associate r3d's with virtualdub and then doubleclick to open. I never use it for processing, but its great as a quick viewer.

He has not rebuilt these in a while.

Hey guys - just wanted to share a very cool thing:

StormUSBmonitor.jpg

This is a small 7" monitor connected to my MBP via single USB cable that provides both video signal and power. I am able to move the scopes from the Storm UI onto it and it will give me real-time scope functionality while playing my R3D's. Normal HW scopes cost upwards from $3000 USD and require additional HW video board to feed them with SDI/HD-SDI signal. This monitor is $150 and the scopes come with Storm...

 Peter

PS: They also have a 10" one with touch-screen. You know where I am going with this...

No kidding, this is unbe-f#cking-lievable!

Cannot wait to purchase. Will this feature be available in the demo version or do we have to wait for the £$€ version?

Thanks Peter

All the best,

That's the USB monitor we bought at Yodobashi!

Can anyone share the make and model of the USB monitor?

Indeed Kaku! Now You know why I was asking for this... Everyone at The Foundry really appreciates all the help You and MUSETEX have provided during the Storm's development, including the broadcast monitor and my logistics. We couldn't have done this without You!

I am going to be back in Tokyo soon and have a lot more exciting news to share...

Right now I have to go and look for my voice. I have lost it somewhere at the show...

Again - thank You so much for everything!

:cheers2:

Just a shout out to anyone planing a RED project in Japan - Musetex is the one-stop place for all Your needs. They represent me as a DoP and colorist and they have full facilities and resources to take Your production from A to Z, including planing, budgeting, locations, equipment, crew, production, post and delivery...

Wow - excellent - are they only direct sales? They don't seem to have a dealer network.

Hm, we should think about exporting then.

Would be great if the scopes could be sent via usb to iphone or ipad, or maybe scopes on iphone and color control surface for ipad :)

Would that be possible with AirTV?

EDIT> Dumbass me...

I'm liking that $150 monitor.... That I misread and thought was a $3K monitor.

Uh... Why are people going nuts over a $3K monitor with a built-in USB to VGA converter? WTF? Overpriced... Way overpriced.

Why not use a small conventional HD monitor for under $1K and then just connect it right to the DVI or DisplayPort connector on your system? SmallHD has both 5.6" and 8.9" monitors, 1280x800 and 1280x768 respectively. Both connect via HDMI port and can be driven with a DVI to HDMI cable or DisplayPort to HDMI cable/adapter. Several others on the market too..

Wait, what's that? You already have a second monitor occupying your DVI or DisplayPort connector on your MBP? No problem. USB2 to DVI video adapters to add another display are around $100. USB2 to VGA can be had for $50.

Sorry if I come off a bit rude, but I don't see the point in spending a $2K premium on a monitor just because it has a $100 video converter built in. And no other connectivity options, apparently.

Jeff, read Katu post again, he said it cost $150! (and replaces a $3000 hardware scope)
