  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

STORM by The Foundry

Save look option in what extent?

well for one, i usually apply 2-3 looks say on on sunset and go back and forth to see which i like....instead of continued work in RCX would be nice to save 1, 2, 3 etc....apply look.

Ah, you can save different looks for the metadata and also other fx plugin along, too.

Is there any chance that foundry will support secondary CC ?

If you read the website content, it does say applying "basic" secondary correction.

Luma qualifiers are already in there for all effects. More to come.

Hi Nick, you must be having fun with Peter there.

fxguide Ted's interview, Ted mentioned about trimming R3D in Storm. It's official.

The more I learn about STORM the more it looks to be the bomb.
Secondaries? HSL key with vignette like COLOR?
and r3d trimming? wow

price point suits the soon to be scarlet wielding masses, Foundry should make a killing with this

Hi

In that road map is there the ability to:

Create rushes within MXF wrapper (not essential if it is happy with Dnxhd wrapped quicktimes)
Create ALE
Pull and render to anything
Pull and render to Avid compatible 444 uncompressed format
Pull from XML,EDL,AAF etc

regards

Michael

There is tons of features that will be added after the initial release - roadmap is killer.

Mark,
how would you compare to Resolve if you are only using one tool? Currently i go from RCX---one light then to Prores, to FCP, Color---final out to prores graded and cut.

In that situation it seems resolve may have the upper hand to handle everything in one yes? Or looking like Storm could do this as well? Maybe not as much editing or grading power?

**bottom line is i and others i know that are mostly producing stock footage want to eliminate jumping around so much and of course grade from the R3d's and then out to prores with ability to tweak prores with access back to r3d.

Hey guys! I haven't had much sleep and have to shoot of for another crazy day full of demos, but here's a quick update and few answers:

Yesterday we have started to show Storm on a dedicated "pod" (read "workstation in the corner of the booth) through out the whole day together with James Wilson and Nick Shaw. After several demos the day was nicely finished off with our joint presentation with Ted to a completely packed (The) Foundry's booth...

The feedback we are getting is truly amazing - as it should be. Even though I have been involved with Storm's development from the very beginning, myself I can't still believe what the brains at The Foundry have come up with in such a short time. Ultimately - in my honest opinion - the main thing I like about RED is that they have brought a traditionally very expensive pro cine gear to such a affordable level that all common folks have access to the very best technology for digital cinematography and there is no longer (technical) difference between hundreds-of-millions-dollars Hollywood productions and hundreds-of-thousands-dollars Joe Blow production, or even just a thousands-of-dollars Jane Blow production - leaving the difference to artistic expression and talent... You can find this same revolutionary approach with The Foundry and Storm. Tools that would traditionally cost hundreds-of-thousands are now embodied in a SW that will retail at $375...

The key strengths of Storm is to keep Your project in RAW-based non-destructive workflow from start to finish, ability to organize and manage Your R3D library (not just on a project level), extremely user-friendly and intuitive UI and heavily optimized back-bone engine that supports the RED Rocket and host of pro assist tools (such as real-time scopes). The RR will accelerate Your transcodes (if You still believe You need them), provide You with broadcast high-quality output and help in accelerating the UI. Having said that - it is truly amazing how responsive the Storm is even on a MacBook Pro without the RR. I can do things now on the MBP that makes me feel like Alice in Wonderland and blow peoples minds away when they see it with their own eyes. If You can - please stop by The Foundry's booth and request a private demo, or join us for the daily demo in the main theatre at the same booth (schedule can be found on The Foundry's website - http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/articles/2010/09/07/150/ibc-schedule/ )...

For the rest of You few quick answers:

- as of now we have working support for the Euphonix surfaces, but Storm will support others as well, including the Wave and hosts of others, all they way to iPad. Yeap, iPad...

- while the initial development is on Mac platform, Windows and Linux versions will follow...

- there are many more useful controls then "just" a sharpening...

- R3D trimming - YES!!!

- not only supporting complex and variable (YES - VARIABLE!!!) looks, but also support for things like CDL (Color Decision Lists) and LUT's...

- there will be secondaries and much, much more - wait for the full roadmap announcement...

Here's the best part. As of November 1st You will be able to register at The Foundry's website and download FREE version of the SW to use until the end of January. No watermarks, no limitations, no restrictions on use - go ahead and use it on a production... From February 1st it will then become paid app, if we can call it that, because at $375,- this is a steal... I would gladly pay $10000 for this app and they are people paying tens of thousands for apps that do less...

Today we are recording a demo for FX Guide, which should come online soon thereafter on both The Foundry's and FX Guide sites, as well as the RED forums...

Stay tuned for more updates...

Gotta run!

 Peter
