  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone work out what the settings should be for the GPI port when using an external trigger?
I made a manual trigger to deliver the required voltage and I set the recording mode to external frame trigger with 1frames/pulse.
The brain GPIO is set to record start with a High in and record stop with a Low in.
The LCD show the word Trigger at the lower right and the upper right of the screen has Trigger 0 frames with a grey dot .
When I trigger a pulse the dot goes yellow but nothing is recorded...

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but there seems to be no update to the Epic manual yet to cover time lapse

any help much appreciated

- In the Recording Dialog set the Recording Mode to "External Frame Trigger".
- Map a key to "Record: External Frame Trigger".
- Press Record to start a recording (the first frame will be captured)
- Press your mapped key to capture a frame (repeat for as many frames as you like)
- Press Record to stop recording frames to that file.

there ya go...

hi paul.. thanks for the quick reply... what you suggest makes sense.

What I want to do is have an external button to press so that I do not have to touch the camera - like a single frame cable release... but create one clip in a file.

having done a bit more experimenting...
I have managed to get things to go the way I want almost....
In the Recording Dialog set the Recording Mode to "External Frame Trigger".
In the Brain GPIO(set up settings) set the Camera Input to "General Purpose In"
Set the Brain GPI In High to "Record External Frame Trigger".
Set the Brain GPI In Low to "Record start".
set the Camera Output to "Recording Indicator Out"
This results in recording single frames at the push of my external trigger button without pressing record on the camera - I still have to press the record button on the camera to stop recording but at least it is at the end of the process.
what seems counter intuitive to me is the "Record Start" for the GPI In Low setting... but I'm no expert!

thanks again

Just thinking, could you not just use the redmote and set the trigger hotkey to one of the redmote buttons?

yeah... redmote. are there any other options anyone knows about? i know some people are using the dragon software... how does that connect?

I think anything should work trough the control port. I wish to run the camera in "highspeed stop motion" so we can do motion control with vari speed but I was told in some thread here that the epic can only take a pulse up to 60/second.... is anyone doing something like that. Would be so cool to be able to run the camera off the rig and let the rig control the frame snapping. Then we can also do multi focus exposure and such for each frame.

Hi Björn... thanks for that suggestion... I originally had been thinking that it should be possible with the Redmote but it does mean that one is tied to its battery charge life, so a wired solution seems to be a better option for me at least. I would be interested in any configurations anyone can come up with - to have as much flexibility as possible.

I think you then want the madly fin stuff. Extended with a Bnc cable it does what you want.

Have there been any further advancements on this issue? I have a client that wants to use an Epic to shoot a stop motion animated commercial. They MAY want/need to be able to use some kind of motion control rig also, for some rudimentary camera moves. We have the Epic, and the Pro I/O module, Side handle, as well as the Redmote. Stop motion is out of my realm of experience/expertise so any and all suggestions/advice are welcome. Looking to not have to reinvent, or even build the wheel, just want something that will allow for a single 5k frame to be popped each time you push a (remote) trigger.
If anyone has experience in the best options for playing back/comparing frames using the Epic in an animation work environment, I'd love to hear about that too.

Thanks much!

I made one as per the diagram in the Epic manual. Then it's down to the GPIO settings in the camera. It is simple to make (I am not an expert by any means). Or you could just go for the items listed in post #7 above... They seem a bit pricey for a simple "just record one frame" trigger but if your use is more complicated then worth checking out....
good luck

Oh and I forgot to mention you will need the Red cable that is Lemo to BNC - unless you feel handy with wiring those miniscule Lemo plugs - I got the cable from RED a lot less hassle.
