James, do you have a photograph of the trailer? Any stickers or anything to let us know if we see yours out there?

Wow. Where do you hide something like this?

There are a bunch of auto scrapyards and metal recyclers in Sunland area so
possibly someone could try to cut it up and scrap it. And all the heavy weights to balance it.
Yeah..it seems most likely they would try to scrap it...cause who would they sell it to.
Horrible thought..but that's what the world has come to.
Familiar with this area myself and can't put a metal chair in the front yard or someone will grab it.
Used to be difference in the First World or Developed countries and the 3rd world. Not anymore.

You should have the police put a "scrap alert" on it so all the metal recyclers can be on the lookout
for it.

Sound a little bit like a theft to order. Once it goes inside of a shipping container surrounded by legitimate metal scrap and emigrates west to Taiwan or Singapore, it may be gone to a new career.

Here are photos of the stolen trailer and crane. There are only 3 or 4 of these in the world, all custom built.
The trailer is black 14 feet by 7.6 feet with a side door and back loading ramp. Brand is Hiway Cargo.
Top roof in front is cracked in the fibre glass in a "V" pattern. California trailer License no. 4FV9201.

Crane stolen was bottom arm, weights, weight carrier, gear mount and crab dolly. Only one of these crab dollys in the U.S. If anyone sees anything close to this description anywhere, please send PM.

We were in the middle of a feature production when this got snatched. Thanks if anyone can help recover the crane portion in time for our shoot.

Hope you catch the thieving scumbags.

Police now investigating on felony grand theft.

Sucks! i hope they catch the dregs and only wish we had public stoning in place. That said, i notice your trailer is pleading to be hooked up and driven away....my trailers ALL have hitch locks on them so it at least makes it a pain in the ass to steel them. I have ZERO trust these days out on the streets....with bags, cases or trailers/cars. I just assume that people are lurking and waiting to steel what i leave behind. Hence no thefts in a long while. I'm sure you'll take appropriate precautions with your next rig. And hope you catch the rats.

GPS Tracking for your goodies.

GPS Tracking for your goodies.

I can't say I've had the best of luck with gear running off -- I live by the golden rule (do onto others as they do onto you) and unfortunately in most of my cases the perpetrator believes that running off with smaller items,, small grip equipment, smaller camera accessories, etc doesn't hurt as bad, but it adds up so, so fast.

With my larger items, camera body, AKS cases, etc... I pop one of these in there:

They're easy to conceal in your road cases or pelicans, hide them somewhere in the foam, and whoila! Your thief's location will be a hop and a skip away easy for you to pay him a visit pulp fiction style (or you can just call the police)

;D

Those GPS units are cool.

Now all I need is a time machine to go back to the day before it was stolen and install it.

Of course, if I had the time machine I could save the gps monthly fee by installing a hand grenade on the trailer hitch so that
the thieves would leave their fingerprints along with a leg, an ear and a detached right arm. Then return in time back to a few minutes after the explosion, dump the body parts in their truck, set it on fire and push it over a cliff.

It's only fair.....

Cool. FBI stepping in to raise the stakes. Apparently rises to the level of interstate theft making it a Federal Crime.

Yeah, the thief is trying to sell it now. Looks like whoever is buying or selling will do some time.

If someone offers you a great deal on a MC88 Matthews Crane, it's probably stolen. JP

It's almost certainly gone to Russia or Eastern Europe.
At one point 10 years ago I believe almost half the Mercedes in Moscow were stolen in the west.
Who else would have the expertise and network to steal this kind of thing?

He's local. And right now in total panic.
