  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stills from motion...

The difference between motion and still modes

The difference between motion and still modes

What might be the difference between motion and still modes in the Epic/Scarlet?
I agree that this is an amazing frame grab from motion but it really doesn't convince me that Epic is for stills. I get the "Look" thing, but working in the studio (or location) with controlled lighting I don't really mind how nice the noise looks in 800 iso. I just care how noise free it looks in the lowest iso I can get. As a commercial still photographer (as opposed to docu\sports\event etc) who also does some motion I would be more interested in seeing some low iso clean and sharp examples. That would be what persuades me.

What these cameras do in motion is already so far ahead than what I know\have\ever dreamed of having but I am still waiting for the stills.

Don't get me wrong, I'm I'm holding on to my old Nikon D2x and not buying a new one just because I'm waiting for the Scarlet ff.
I'm one of the believers.
Just anxious to get some info for the still shooters out there.

Thanks Joshua, Blemishes removals one by one, and painstaking Hand brushed and a pass of Gussian Blur :)

Crap! I was hoping you'd point me to some magical software package that takes care of it all :) A lot of people do the whole "dupe it as another layer, gaussian blur the heck out of it, mask it all out, and selectively unmask the skin tones" trick, but I've never been happy with the way that looks. You kept the skin texture intact, and it really makes all the difference.

What do you do for moving pictures, though? Not frame-by-frame? I have a client who asked me to get rid of his facial imperfections, and while I could get rid of the bigger bumps (personally, I didn't think he looked bad in the first place) frame-by-frame in AE, but much more than that would've been too much; and even then I felt like, "there must be a better way."

One thing I notice with higher and higher resolution is imperfections with makeup consistency, rogue hairs, etc, is RED planning on releasing a new make-up line to deal with higher resolution? :P

I kid, but it is true, I always hear "We'll fix it in post" but it starts to become A LOT of post!!! :)

Having worked along side photographers for a few years now in the sports industry, I highly doubt I will ever see any of them don an epic for their needs. It's nifty that it can do that but I don't see a practical use.

I will be shocked if every sports photog doesn't have an epic behind his big white canon lens as soon as he can get his hands on one. Sports and nature photography is all about capturing just the right moment, and shooting 24fps (or more) is gonna be how they're gonna do it. Now fashion and landscape photography, I think that's where people will probably stick with their stills cameras.

Come to think of it, the big white lens is brilliant marketing on Canon's part, I think we can all agree on that. They print an ad that's just a bird's-eye view of a sideline of a football game, you see the big white lenses, and you say, "wow, if these pro photographers are using Canon, I should too." Could be a clever move for Red if they made the Epics visually distinctive in some really obvious way, like if the tops were all red or something, to where you could glance at a Canon ad and see a bunch of Epics in use. Okay fine, Canon would probably photoshop them out, but it'd still work for when you're watching a game or seeing photos in the sports section of a newspaper.

It could be as simple a matter as releasing a "Sports Edition" Epic, that was the same as a regular one, but just with a white body, and preset with the ideal sports settings.

Have you tried the Epic in still mode with strobes yet? For photographers having the 24fps is great but many don't want to deal with continues lighting and for photography, strobes have so many advantages. I would love to see how the sync option for strobes works with Epic to avid the split frames.

Wow have we been using different cameras. I've been shooting a D2x for the last 5 years and I WISH 800 looked that clean.

Thank God my new D700 arrived Friday!

Yeah but there is clean and then there is MX clean. ;)

Can we see it without the grading? the closest to the original will be great..
Great look anyways.
I'd love to see a few RAW files from this shoot (or another shoot) so I could play around with it.

How will that work exactly? Will Photoshop Raw handle it (if not now eventually)? Or would you process it in RedcineX and then save as a TIFF or something?

Well nothing god comes easy ;) Time and patience is the key to good work, for moving images is al an other story, but yeah for a small amount of frame it can be done one by one and or do one and then apply to al and it works well for some images in similar BG and positioning, other then that I believe that few programs are in the works to allow for Skin smoothing for motion, and they could not come at a better time with such resolution and capacity of resolve, with clarity and sharpness as the Epic will bring will be sure needed, and or back to using Softening filters ;)

Digital Anarchy made great plug-ins for motion graphics such as
a matrix 01010 effect and others. But lately they concentrated on
PhotoShop plug-ins..but now they have Beauty Box for motion out.
Check out demos..movies and examples...

I think he used a RED RPP 300mm at T4.0, 1/60 and ISO 800 for this shot. Pretty sure.

Jim

Hi Jim,

this camera changes the game so much in terms of lighting.
Is it possible to know what kind of light source and setup is being used? Their power? Maybe just ambient light, but the second shot shows at the very least 2 light sources.
Like last week with the tiger shot. I doubt hundreds of watts are needed anymore, especially at ISO 800 and T4.

Thanks

This is probably already on RED's roadmap but for those occasions when you need to get great stills and smooth motion from the same camera (and you have enough light):

take the shutter speed up to 1/250th or 1/500th @ 24fps and shoot. The fast shutter will solve the motion blur issue for the stills so that's taken care of. Then process the motion clips in post using a variant of the O-Flow tech to re-create the motion blur you would have had with a 180° shutter (1/48th in this example).
Hopefully RED and the Foundry are already experimenting with how to make the motion blur addition look natural. Based on the early evidence provided by the HDRx™™ testing these guys seem to have found very good methodology for managing blur...

Note: If the amount of subject and/or camera movement is limited you might be able to go to a 1/96th shutter and avoid the extra step.

In terms of the side discussion on whether sports stills shooters would be interested in the Epic vs a Canon/Nikon; 120 fps at 1/500th at 12MP+ sure sounds nice. If you have the business model to support the cost of an Epic and your shooting assignments don't typically require ridiculously long treks sans wheels then the Epic should be a strong contender.

Cheers - #19

still vs motion stills

still vs motion stills

It is a still... taken from a 24fps motion stream. Just think really high frame rate DSLR. :-)
Jim

I don't know if jim or jarred already explained how the record button will work in still or movie mode in regard of the recorded files?

Right know I believe it works just as one would expect from the "real" world (i.e. outside the red gates):

movie - push button recording begins, push button again recording stops
still - push button, one picture is taken
still - hold button, a burst of pictures is taken

now:
is it possible to hold the button in the movie mode to capture a film burst for as long as I hold it, in order to use the short film clip to grab a still afterwards? A futuristic, moving version, of a "still" frame? ;)
or:
how many pictures will be taken if I hold the button in the still mode? 24? :)
or can I just choose from 10 to 120 pics/sec (regarding the data rate)? hehehe...

awesome for set/theater photography

awesome for set/theater photography

Another +point would be set photography or stage photography (is it called that in English, taking photo's during a play?)
I'm using a 5DII for that now, but I really detest using a blackbox or such.
This camera wouldn't make any shutter sound.... Awesome!
