  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Still changing...

Boy how much more clear does RED need to state that they are not going to do an optical finder? The cost would be astronomically more money.
I believe he was referring not to a reflex optical finder but to a rangefinder.

It actually doesn't seem feasible to make a camera like this for the cost they are selling it for. Never mind making a profit. (I guess the idea is to make a profit 5+ years in after initial delivery)
Jim wouldn't be doing it if there were little profit potential. Red doesn't have the overhead or the vested interests of a Panasonic or Sony, plus in some ways the Red cameras are simpler (e.g., with one chip there's no prism block, and with RAW output there's no need for circuits, or the associated licenses, to encode the various HD and SD formats). Look, even Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic are getting into the act, but in a limited way. If they really cared about competing with Red, they could come up with a dSLR that does what Scarlet does. But the market is pretty small -- tens or low hundreds of thousands of units rather than millions -- to go too much further than providing some HD video capability in a relatively cheap piece of equipment. For them highly functional HD video cameras are big-ticket items. The digital-cinema market is all Red does, so there's no real chance of the low end cannibalizing the high end.

We expect that some 3rd party will consider making an optical finder for this system. But I would expect that it will not be cheap. We have no interest to build it ourselves at this point.

The only problem is that if you can not wait because I have to work with the project and expected to leave alone and the scarlet investors to make one but I do not see when this movie ends. and to have my camera

Not exactly sure what you are saying, but if you need an optical finder to do your work, I have an A-Minima for sale.

After reading the above, I realize that I might have sounded "glib". Not my intention. Maybe a better way to say it is that it isn't our goal to solve EVERY problem for EVERY person or situation. There are other tools out there if you need something we don't make.

Jim

You are getting an ridiculous amount of value/feature set already with Scarlet, Epic and the One. Lets not get greedy.

I suppose if you need 4k resolution you could buy/rent an Arri 235 or Aaton Penelope, or whatever if an optical viewfinder is the only way to go for you.

I think he is just frustrated with delivery time frame. Like all of us he wants his camera NOW!

Jim or Jarred,

Can you tell us a little bit about the design lifecycle for the Scarlet and how these these renderings fit into the process?

Thanks,

Roland

Just to let you know we are still working... :-)

Jim

Hehe, perfect for me, since I can see S%$@$#! from the right side.

Good to see some updates and images on the progressing work.

**EDIT**
Actually, after looking the render more carefully, I think that this is not at all a left eye setting, but rater a strait right eye shoulder mount configuration.

But unless my NOSE gets really on the way I think it can still be used as a left eye configuration for hand held photography as well.

Thanks.

I'd hold onto the a-minima

If I were you, and having looked at the new design, I'd have a look at the a-minima's superior ergonomics first. Maybe the render might be good for DSLR use but for sustained MP use I'd say it's going to be an unsteady elbow killer!

To all you all bashing on the ergonomics of this: stop forgetting that the Scarlet and Epic brains are only small pieces in a well documented modular set up. The Scarlet brain is far smaller than the entire A-minima body, if were all of a sudden going to use that as a benchmark. This will allow it the scarlet to be built into a similar shape when needed but - aha!, and here's the good part - changed when needed too! I think we're all gonna look back in four or five years, when 4K and big chips are the norm, and realize that the most significant change that Scarlet and Epic brought was the "erector-set" camera system. I, for one, am jazzed about it.
Peace,

-Harry

By "MP" I assume you mean "Motion Picture?"

Why would it kill my elbows? It's going to go on my shoulder like ever other camera. Now it can be lighter and kill my back and elbows less. I will configure it differently than pictured but that is the joy if it. Massive configuration variability.

Jim

And how are you planning to split the signal to both sensor and optical VF ?. Mirror shutter or is it just going to be for photos ?.

He isn't planing anything. He is saying that expects someone else will do it on their own.

Yes but a LOT of (less financial) people are going to be shooting with close to the minimum configuration Scarlet - and based on all renders so far that ain't going to be comfortable. I see no reason that we can't have 'Massive configuration variability' AND an ergonomic base configuration. The current renders look to me less comfortable then even a standard DSLR.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a hater, I'm a fan pushing for the best camera ever.

fantastic the eyepiece is not on a cable
all my dps tend to bend the magic arms till they stop working
have you put some thought into that at work today
peace o red

Yeah, but all the modules are shaped like bricks. They're essentially gussied-up Radio Shack project boxes. It won't matter if the guts do what's claimed, though. The final cameras will still be a value for the price, but I don't think you're ever going to see Red products that are designed to be comfortable to use.
