  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steven Soderbergh to retire

You are right Mike.

But for me EPIC is the real 35mm alternative. Like Jim said EPIC is the first digital camera to beat film in every way. The small size allows you to shoot with no crew if that's what you wan't. Very "Micro Budget". And you can buy the EPIC-S which is almost 50% cheaper than the original R1 "M".

I would argue that this is the case with the Red One right now. You can easily strip the R1 down into a one man band shooting configuration. R1 M-X is more expensive than an Epic-S will be, so on price alone you might be able to make the argument. And sure, the Epic form factor will be much more hand-holdable than R1. I will say this, filmmakers who are able to make great films with no crew are a rare bunch. In my opinion, collaboration is what makes films great a lot of the time. Even if it's a 2 or 3 person crew. Making films by yourself requires great skill in many areas, and also means you need exceptional ability to be able to handle the technical requirements at the same time as the directing. Some have pulled that off. Many others have failed.

Yes, you can make a nice one man band shooting configuration with the R1. ;-) But still, I would be happier with an EPIC rig. Much smaller and more hand-holdable.

I shot my first feature movie (80 min. Black & White) alone. No crew. Had to do everything all by myself. From writing to editing. Great experience with 3 actors. But I do agree. Collaboration makes films great and I'm looking forward to having a small 2 or 3 person crew for my next movie.

I trust an artist retirement as much as a rattlesnake in a cave...

How about we hold our tongues until we hear directly from Steven. He is a friend of mine...

I don't know Steven personally but I admire his films. There could be many reasons why someone who has giving 110% of their time and energy towards something and feels that it's time to go on to something else. I became a father at the very top of my career and decided to stop shooting in order to "be around." Now, eight years later I'm back shooting and loving it. I wouldn't of traded those "lost years" for anything. There could be many reasons, some of which, we might not never know. Let's wait and see. He is one of our greatest filmmakers.

Uhhhh.... Didn't the Red One already do that 3 years ago? Last I checked, Epic costs almost 50% more than the Red One. Not exactly encouraging "micro budget cinema."

Now, if you want to substitute "Scarlet" for "Epic" I might agree with you.

Well, a lighter more compact camera might save you some money... or at least some time.

I've only been shooting with the EPIC for a matter of days - but IMO - even on a low budget film, the EPIC will save you time and money. You can work faster, no question.

Micro budget cinema would be scarlet,

some what less micro - big budget films would be EPIC

either way EPIC for price to features and quality is quite cheap, especially since firmware updates so far have been free and they have benefited the system greatly (hoping the same will apply to EPIC and beyond)

As for the retiring, everyone says stuff all the time, doesn't make it true until it's proven...though if your having so much fun, i doubt he'll retire at 51

Very true Francis... :-)

Well, I'm not speaking for Mr. Soderbergh, but it is not uncommon for artists to become jaded with their art - or art in general - after having dedicated a lifetime to the finer points of expression (ones that deal with humanity, morality, the essence of living) only to overwhelmed by a public's indifference, or its taste for Life Lite. Art (serious art) can be a very lonely place. And then there is the controlling faction of financiers, the arbiters of taste. The list is long.

Anyway, It would be a sad day if Soderbergh were to retire from making films, his work has profoundly affected many of us.

Ars longa, Vita brevis

If I remember correctly he also speaks about short attention spans and that audiences don't obsess and talk about movies like they used to. The impact isn't there anymore.
For most people movies are things you watch once and then forget it and go to the next one. Just like hit music, you hear one song all over the place for a while and then it's gone and no one cares about anymore. In a way it's even worse with movies since movies are only watched usually once. Good (hit) song you will be listening for few months form radio and your mp3 player etc.

It's not the same like it used to be. You watched good movies with your friends 10 times when you were younger. It was like that still in the 90's. Now it's new movie every time, every night. Internet will be sure to keep the trend growing.
