Hey guys, I just thought I'd share this with you.... I find it not only interesting but I think it's deeply true.

Steve Jobs in 1997 at WWDC talked about competing against Monopolies, which is what RED has been doing in the last several years. Of course he is not talking about RED directly, but about why great products work, regardless if they compete against an already existing monopoly. He has some really cool points he talks about, one of them mentioned below. And as a great side aspect, there's also '97 Steve to look at :)

"... every good product ... is because a group of people cared deeply about making something wonderful that they and their friends wanted. They wanna use it themselves..."

Huge!, thanks for share!

Awesome, thanks for posting. I'm convinced Steve is one of the few "good guys" and not illuminati .....

You're welcome, guys.
It was really eye opening, considering the similarities. Think about it: Apple now maybe one of the big guys, but back then, competing against IBM... it's really almost the same stuff.

Anthony, I hope you're right ;) I like to think of Apple / Steve of "one of the good guys", some of their actions leave me doubting that sometimes, but until now I still stand by that belief.

Saw this for the iCloud thing, his idea or more so dream of networking for the masses, really wanted to know though how he managed to network his house, Pixar and Apple + Next all together so he just had to log in with his user name etc. and everything was there...that's madness for 1997! Can only imagine his set up now...

Never realized though the look at RED from this but that's pretty interesting take, makes sense especially when you include his "no one needs to lose" kind of attitude

The iCloud posts is how I found it. Awesome stuff. Shows how he never gives up on his vision.

Interesting to note the similar nomenclature that both Jim and Steve share in. Phrases such as "We were to stupid to not know..."

It's true, that great minds think alike.

watching that video is absolutely incredible. that guy is out of control. describing the cloud, the iPad, the app store. all over a full decade before these things existed. truly inspiring.

both steve jobs and jim jannard are personal heroes of mine. i love their style, their vision, and more than anything, what drives them. and it ain't money. you can tell they are having fun, and LOVE what they do, and take joy in making as much of an impact as possible.

both true visionaries.

Interesting points... visionaries indeed, and a *true* visionary makes one hell of a salesman without hardly even trying; Jim could sell a truckload of sunglasses to a caveload of bats, just by wearing them and looking cool :D

But don't forget the other Steve; Woz. Every True Visionary who's too stupid to know something can't be done needs a True Geek to help them find a way to do it. Take a bow Woz, Graeme, Deanan, and everyone else who wears that hat.

Good observation ;-D

Thanks for sharing

Just dug this up again, in reminiscence of Steve's parting.
I wish we had Jim's vision of the future to indulge in. And by vision I'm not talking about 5K EPIC. This is the now.
As much as it's the future for everyone, this is all happening right now. Unbelievable!

Jarred was mentioning joseph hutson's hanging out in front of their door while they were inside planning futuristic mischief ;)
Maybe some day Jim will share again. Maybe, if some of us are lucky, at least in private.

Jim, jarred, Deanan, Graeme...(and all the other brains behind it) You are the new Apple for cinema. Kudos! And thanx for the ride!

I like the way PC's embrace 3rd party technology. I can build a PC, use whatever memory, GPU, CPU, motherboard I want, and customize it so it's just right for me, and gives me the most bang for my buck.

Apple has always said, uh no, sorry. We make Apple products, and we'll tell you what you can do with them, and how they will work. You will not be using any 3rd party products, you will be buying APPLE hardware if you want to use a Mac.

Look at this list of PC hardware. I can get a motherboard made from any manufacturer from Acer to Zotac.

Where do I get a Mac motherboard?

Uh, Apple. Or a store selling Apple used or surplus stuff.

IMO, if Jobs was one of the "good guys" we'd see tons of companies manufacturing Mac motherboards competing with one another, so you could get the best price on a product that's just right for you.

I don't see Red being anything like Apple. I would certainly hope Red did not go out of their way to make sure nothing would work on the camera except stuff sold in the Red store.

Look at the Iphone. When it released, you could only use the cell phone carrier approved by Apple.

Look at the Apple editing software. Can I get Final Cut for a PC? No, you have to buy a Mac.

Look at Adobe Premiere. Run it on a Mac, PC, whatever, they cater to everyone.

So I certainly hope Red is more like a PC than Mac. If someone makes a great third party accessory, embrace it. Don't try to configure the camera so it won't work, so you maintain total control. If you've got a great product, availability of third party accessories only make it better.

I think if Apple were to loosen up on this philosophy, they'd actually gain some decent market share. Why, for example, would you not make a PC version of Final Cut, when Adobe makes an Apple version of Premiere? They're only costing themselves market share, and probably losing Mac sales because of it.

Put it this way. If Red were like Apple, there would be no Canon mount. Red would say, use Red lenses, don't use anything else, we won't allow it, and we'll do our best to make sure Canon lenses don't work on a Red.

But Red is not like that at all. Jarred already said we love Canon, we have no desire to put them out of business, they make great glass. THAT's the way you do it. BOTH companies win.
