  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

State of the Scarlet MX...

Great stuff Alex, very inspiring :)

Really good work, Alex! Great colors in the MV!

This one was a mix of GoPro Hero 6 and my old Scarlet MX coupled with Sigma 18-25 1.8 ART EF, 70-200 f/4 no IS:

Scarlet MX/fujinon cabrio 18-90/ultraprimes

Scarlet MX/cinealta/pro-mist 1/4

and this one could be my Scarlet MX, but was Epic MX instead. But actually could have been Scarlet otherwise. As usual, ultraprimes.

Love the Skin Tones in the MV! Did you do the color grade?

Love the Skin Tones in the MV! Did you do the color grade?

Both Music Videos were color corrected by the same colorist - https://vimeo.com/lishchyna

The first one was done almost in-camera, except some over-saturated colors and skin retouch (mostly by crushing mid tone detail up to -80). Interior shots were lit by one skypanel 60c, some astera tubes, and a Lowell Rifa light. Exteriors were supported by two skypans 60c. Of course, we did some shot to shot matching, and basic local adjustments on things I didn’t like from set due time limitations.

The second one was heavily graded, to a much more warming tones. The grain was also added in post. Otherwise, the halation is an effect from heavier than usual pro-mist filter and flary cinealta primes

The TVC was color graded by https://vimeo.com/379022407

Appreciate the love guys. Doing my best to make the old MX work for me. I do really love then sensor so long as we all know, we can get enough light in.

Alex Lubesnkey killing it with the MX sensor still. Appreciate you sharing man these look stellar. I have a question regarding your experience with the 18-35. Do you have / use the photo or cine version? I have the photo version and sometimes when I stop down and at infinity focus I get an overall soft image. Really tricky to explain, but I'm not sure if it's a back focus issue or a focus throw capability issue. I did add some sharpening in Cine-X, but I'm not in love with the results.

I *might* be able to help here. Apparently, AF lenses must be able to focus past infinity. There is a good reason for this but I can't recall it. In any case, maybe that's the problem? If it is, you probably should be careful to focus on an object in the distant background via the LCD.

I've used to have a photo version. Usually I work with something like Ultraprimes or Cinealta's for low-budget productions, and Sigma was for prep or small personal tests or sometimes free projects. It suits well for prep as it has a T 2.0 (F 1,8 is T 2.0 in cine version), you can evaluate lighting on location, colorimetry or sizing. Of course, you can do this with a phone and a directors viewfinder app, but when you need to do mix lighting - use location lighting and your set lighting - it's always good to check the colors for being acceptable with your camera.

Regarding photo glass - it tends to loose it's quality over time. Mine was barely used, so I didn't experience any quality issues. But I've used to experience a lot of quality issues with Canon glass before. The thing is anything made of plastic is limited mechanically. 1-2 years of extencive use - and it's most-likely dead. So just sell it and renew over time, if you feel satisfied with it's optical qualities. But, I have to say - try normal cinema glass from time to time, and your sensor will open up waaaaaay more. It literally shines with good glass, any photo lens I know won't open the sensor even in half.

Karim, you're onto something here definite;y. Valid point, though I never throw my lens to the end of the focusing range as it does go past infinity. That I am aware of. I typically magnify on my monitor to set critical during wides.

Alex, Interesting point. I'd have to do another test with my Contax as well to see how it fares at distances past like say 6ft. Looking at the focus throw now, the Sigma has like 1/4 the throw from focusing at 6ft to infinity as my 35mm Contax does. The 50mm Contax even more than that. I'm sure that plays a big part, but I had never thought of the wearing down of the components. I've owned since new and taken care of it, but that doesn't mean a whole lot to the plastics through regular use. It is quite acceptably sharp, but in the closer end of the focusing range. I have more researching to do when it comes to image softness when stopping down. Gotta get it in front of a chart pretty soon I think to really be sure about anything.

Amazing stuff, man! Definitely some of the best Scarlet MX work I've seen yet!

Did 3 music videos recently, with Helium, Gemini and my old Scarlet MX. Still good for the projects.

Alex, Great work. Wondering what the glass on this piece was? I also have a Scarlet MX that I got used in 2013. Still works just fine and I use it all the time as a B-Cam to my Weapon Helium. I will keep using it till it does not work any more...and then I will go find another one.

Those were Arri Ultraprimes, paired with Tiffen Black Pro-mist 1/8 filter

Must be something with your local web stuff - just checked and all links on page 5 are working right now (all on vimeo). Maybe local restrictions or country settings of Vimeo?

the links all worked for me today as I revisited this great work.

Quick question regarding Scarlet MX. Anyone know if a RED PL Titanium DSMC2 will work on it?

I have both version 1 and version 2 and both work just fine.

Hey Lachlan, just a heads up, but the top fan was an additional/non-necessary accessory in order to try to make the camera quieter during operation. So, it's safe to run it without the top fan installed (just make sure the front fan is working... that one is important.)

Rocking mine here in Norway! I still love the image quality! When paired with nice glass, this camera is world class.
