This question is unquestionably simpler than most! I wish to start a new Premiere CS5.5 project that mixes post-transcoded RED footage and footage from the 5D. What settings do I use?

I'm the client! It's to post my reel. I have not idea what codec I should use or any other setting.

That answer may lie in this question: What is your deliverable? What settings; codec did your client ask to be delivered on? Then you can set your timeline up to match that deliverable.

If you're Mac-based, go Pro-Res, especially if the Red footage is already graded. Maybe transcode your 5D footage to ProRes too, though obs not necessary on a PPro timeline. If it's for a reel, master it ProRes 422 (or the DNxHD flavour that's similar if you're PC based) then some kind of 1080p h264 transcode from that for web distribution (depends if you're using vimeo or something else...)

Well, if this is for your reel....then you need to know WHERE it is going...your web? but what does that mean? To vimeo, youtube or just embedded on your server? There are as many answers to your question as folks that will reply. You could go prores, or many varieties of h264, or even flash. But if you want to keep it simple, go to where your video will be hosted and they will have a page that gives this information on WHAT codecs they allow and which may be best. I'm betting a high quality h264 is just fine.

Right on, thank you. It will almost certainly be a link to vimeo or youtube from my website.

Since my version of Premier (5.5) will natively handle both 5D files and whatever my RED footage is transcoded to (someone else did it but I know it works in Premier), can I just start a new timeline and decide the output later? Are there special settings in a new timeline that I must make to handle both these formats?

I use a tutorial on Lynda.com but I haven't gotten to a section that might address this yet.

Crap. I'm so sorry for posting this in the wrong section. I mis-clicked in a hurry.

It will also handle R3D files without transcoding so you can use the original R3D files along with the 5D stuff if you want.

All to proress and then edit.
then export xml and relink the r3d's to the red shots and the proress to the 5D shots and grade in resolve or such.

When I try this it does not work. RCX leaves a gap in the timeline where the non-R3D files are.

Just to be clear, here is my test workflow:
1) Transcode R3Ds to ProRes LT in RCX
2) Transcode AVCHD footage from AF100 to ProRes in FCP/Log and transfer
3) Create a sequence in FCP that uses one clip of each kind (one PreRes LT originally from Epic and one ProRes originally from AF100)
4) Export XML from FCP
5) Import XML in RCX
Result: timeline in RCX correctly has links to the original R3D but no link whatsoever to the other clip, just blank space

Any ideas on how to deal with this?

My goal is to edit seamlessly with footage from both cameras in FCP and then grade in Davinci R9 with the original R3Ds and the transcoded AF100 files. I was hoping since R9 is resolution independent that this would be a nice workflow...
