  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stage 3, 3.5 and beyond...

All I have to say is thanks Jim and RED team!!! Received email 2/9/12. RED received my R1 2/14/12 and I took off from work to receive my EPIC tomorrow! I think everthing is moving smoothly on REDS end! :)

The upgrade program is unprecedented. But it is unfair to expect that we will wait for ever single person to send in their camera and pay their money before we ship another camera. They are two separate programs.

Jim

Thanks Jim for the upgrade program. 'Unprecedented' indeed!

My Epic is due to arrive today! What a day!

Thank you very much!

It involves customers responding to our emails, sending back their cameras, having the cameras inspected, requesting funds and receiving funds. Some don't respond as quickly as others. Should we wait in line for one after another to respond?

Jim

I know I fell into the quick responders camp and I'm sure I got my stage 3 Epic faster than most, shipped my R1 same day, overnight, had already prepaid for the entire camera, respond immediately to emails etc. The whole transaction turned around really quick and smooth in my case.

That's unbelievable. So smooth and so quick. I can't wait to trading in my 6 Red one cameras.

Some concern is that serial numbers have historically related to where customers stand in line for upgrades. If future upgrades (like Dragon) were to be done in order of serial number, then longtime Stage 3 and 3.5 Red owners could potentially find themselves with higher serial number Epic-X cameras than brand new buyers.

This would seem to be a departure from previous policies of customer loyalty.

Perhaps this is already taken care of.

All the EPIC stages have been allocated...

Does this mean that serial numbers have been assigned for all Stage 3 and 3.5 customers before Stage 4 orders?

Ill provide the most detailed backorder update we have ever had in the next 48 hours including the accessories... now that we have visibility on how the stages are going it will be much easier to give you guys better info.
This is going to be a nail biter!!!! I want the PRO I/O soooo badly!! Or at least info on it...

So you get an incredible upgrade and are worried about what exactly? That you fall behind a few serial numbers behind on the next upgrade?

I'd really look closely at what you are saying...

Jim

Maybe we should just say that all upgrades fall behind all new sales?

Jim

I'm just asking questions ... so I understand.

We don't see behind the curtain, so we cannot see the future.

I see that as a problem on this forum. Questions are sometimes misinterpreted as questioning.

If future upgrades (like Dragon) were to be done in order of serial number,
I think any future deals will be handled the way all other businesses do it. First come first served. That's the cheapest and most efficient way. Once Stage 3.5 is done, (everybody notified), the slate is clear. A lower serial number will grant no special privileges IMO.

We promised to step up production. We have.

There are two paths... those that are upgrading and those that are new buying EPIC and Scarlet.

While Stage 3 and 3.5 are a priority for us... it will take time to notify, receive RED ONE trade-ins, examine the returned cameras and collect the funds for the EPIC upgrade. This process is one at a time. And we are on it.

In the meantime... we are producing a ton of EPICs. Rather than just sit on them until all the Stage 3 and 3.5's are finished... we are beginning to fulfill new orders. Makes sense.

This shouldn't be a surprise. Those that are trading in their RED ONEs (for full credit) have a program that is unprecedented in the industry. But to think that we won't continue our business until this process is done is unrealistic. We aren't going to hold orders for new cameras while the upgrade process is in process as long as we have sufficient stock.

Stage 3 and 3.5 will not be held up. But neither will new orders while we have cameras.

Questions?

Jim

Thank you for your time, effort, generosity, and being more than fair in the way you conduct your business.

I only have one question and I suspect it will have to wait, but just how does the upgrade affect Scarlet and Epic respectively.

Much love.

Thanks you to everyone at RED!

- Best wishes.

Actually, we tend to do stuff more by delivery date, not serial number. Like notices to send in Red Ones for trade in, for example.

Trade-in team is separate from Epic and Scarlet production.

I meant more in the lines of specs you can upgrade Scarlet to really. Thanks Brent.

Cheers guys.

Just remember there are some of us who eat sleep and breathe RED that don't work for you -- nothing but love here on 70th on the Upper West Side.

It is ABSOLUTELY incredible that I was able to take a 4 year old camera and trade it in with full original value for a brand new EPIC.
Thank you soooo much Jim!

My Stage3 EPIC arrived the other day and is a thing of beauty :D

 I like you, Brent. It's pretty much the same either way ... and that's cool. It's just good to have that info in advance so as to make intelligent future decisions.

When I think of how much Red gear I own now ... I sometimes have to question my sanity. Two cameras ... every prime lens to date ... and the list goes on. The gear now represents a real percentage of my net worth ... and I'm sure that I'm not alone in this boat.

That should suggest two things.

1) Obviously I (we) have great faith in Red and believe in their future.

but also ...

2) Every purchase decision is critical and bad decisions can eat up weeks or months of hard work.

It just seems a shame to have access to you guys but not be able to ask certain questions. Sometime the question will help you see a problem, and sometimes the answer can mean the world to us.

You guys can always ask, you know that :)

Actually, not true :)

Red One serial numbers were assigned at time of reservation. Some took delivery asap, others waited. So, for example, a person could have serial number 1000 and took delivery in July 2009 while serial number 500 took delivery in December 2009. Priority by delivery date versus serial number, big difference.

The way RED is perceived sometimes just baffles the poop out of me.

If you get to trade in your SEVERAL-YEAR-OLD USED camera for a HUGE pile of cash, you should EXPECT that they would do everything about that trade-in program to their advantage --or at the very least, at a very careful pace. If they don't, then they are even crazier than the dollar figure betrays. Lucky for us, it seems they are. :)

And keep in mind, all of this is ON TOP of the fact that Epic and Scarlet cost a FRACTION of what other cinema cameras cost. And they make prettier pictures! :)

In my opinion there is only one thing to say to RED: "Thank you! And, can I buy more than one?"

[/amiable rant]
