I'm having some trouble getting this puzzle right.

I am planning to buy a Red One, with the possibility to upgrade to an Epic camera. The only thing that concerns me is, when will I be able to buy one (Epic)? If I buy a red One stage 2. It's possible I'm getting in line for -let's say- august?
Cause I read that you have 30 days to buy the Epic once it's your turn. And because it's such a big amount of money I'm not wanting to first buy a Red One en then suddenly have to pay an extra for the Epic in the same month. If that's the case, shouldn't I better wait for the official Epic Launch or something and earn some money in the meanwhile?

What I actually am looking for is some kind of plan, a kind of manual. Have been looking trough this forum but don't seem to find this information.
Wanting to know if this is the time to buy a Red One (and off course with the possibility of the Epic). Or am I too late and should wait till the Epic arrives.
(I'm shooting a documentary this August in North Dakota and will come back in winter, love to shoot this on Red)

Thanks in advance,

Piet, unless something changes - the timeframe for upgrading a purchase is long gone. If you purchase a Red One today, that's it -- no upgrades are possible.

This link below explains more about how it works -- though it hasn't been updated in a while, and some of the package items will be a bit different once everything finally ships -- but this will help you understand things better ...

Basically, what others will advise you to do is purchase a Red One (if you're doing so as a business decision) ONLY if you can recoup your investment appropriately with your projects or clients, and on it's own, as there is no trade in.

In terms of Epic, you can wait - but remember Stage 4 puts you at the back of the line ... which could be fall or later for getting your camera that way. Not to burst your bubble, but there could be 5,000-10,000 people ahead of you when all is said and done. Or you can contact someone like Ketch Rossi and pay a slight premium to take over someone else's Stage 2 or Stage 3 package with a "lease to own" option - and in some cases this would give you a Red One to use right now while also being able to get an Epic early or even as trade in (in the case of a Stage 3).

Others will chime in I'm sure, just wanted to do my part to help :)

Welcome to the forum -- this place is amazing and I'm sure you will love it.

Thanks for the advice Anthony!

So I'm guessing it's maybe better for me to look out for a Red Mx camera with basic accessories?
Will I make any profit buying a Red One (with the ability to trade in for Epic) or buying a Red One right now and wait until next year to sell it and buy an Epic?

I don't think it's possible to, "make a profit" buying a camera. A Camera is a tool which depreciates from the moment you take delivery. A Red One MX and some light bulbs should allow you to shoot video which is for the most part no different from Epic video. I would suggest buy either a RED ONE MX or an Epic-M or wait for Stage 4 Epic-X. There are also the "lease" deals etc. referred to above. If I were in your shoes I would go for stage 4 Epic-X. In the meantime I would write a screenplay and shoot a direct to Blu-ray feature, using an AF100 or EX1. After that, if you're still even remotely interested, the Epic-X should be available at good prices.

Not possible to make a profit from a camera? Haha. Every camera I have ever owned made a profit.

Piet, if you have $30,000+ to spend and you want to get an Epic as soon as possible, contact Ketch and if he has anything available, he could help you get one of the only Red Ones that can be traded in for Epic (or put you higher on the list for an Epic). If you buy a new Red One right now, it can't be traded in.

I think there is a difference in interpretation perhaps. Making a profit WITH a camera may not be the same as making a profit ON the camera. I think you guys are talking in slightly different terms. :001_smile:
