  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am very confused about the whole SSD EPIC thing with EPIC.

What does this all mean for stage 2 deposit holders?

David

Jarred said they are weighing the possibilities.

In a nutshell, here's what I (think) I know, plus a little bit of what I know I know, some of what I know I don't know, and finally, nothing of what I don't know I don't know.

i'm pretty sure I know that the Epic will ship with an SSD side module (an optional adapter will allow the use of CF cards for those who like watching maple sap drip from trees).

What I think I know is that since this is now the default media writer on the Epic, it will either have to be a non-charge item or the price of the Epic will have to be raised.

What I know I don't know is how what I think I know will be handled.

The things I don't know I don't know could fill a book.

David, it looks like they have opted to make the SSD module standard on Epic, and will deal with CF compatibility by offering a CF to SSD slot adapter. I think what Jarred is weighing if I read it correctly is how this will affect price, but he indicated it would go in customer's favor. That's all we know at this point unless I missed something.

There are two SSD modules for Epic: the rear and side module.

Side SSD module = $2,500
Rear SSD module = $1,500

The SSD magazines themselves are:

64GB SSD $950
128GB SSD $1800
256GB SSD $3200

Now stage two people were getting a CF side module in the Epic-X package and we will now be getting a side SSD module instead. From what Jarred said the change is in our favor so it definitely won't cost $2,000 more, if anything.

RED has stated they will be doing packages like they did with the RED One and I think it is likely they will have one where the SSD side module is included at a reduced price. Especially for Scarlet users. My guess is it will only cost $2,500 when you buy it by itself (just my educated guess, not a fact).

are there two sizes off ssd (1,8 and 2,5)?
if so what are the differences?
and how to unload the ssd's?
only through redstations? (if so, i'll order two or three in advance)
thanks

Only 1.8" SSD on camera and the only reader is the REDstation.
The 2.5" REDstation is for using 2.5" media on the computer side and not on camera.

So will the 2.5" Redstation read/offload the 1.8" SSD ? or will their be a separate 1.8" module to read /offload the 1.8"
Thanks

CF cards aren't big enough and fast enough to take advantage of the frame rates and low compression options on an EPIC. So we put together an SSD program that would cover most of the options. Pretty easy stuff.

Since many customers have CF cards that can work for some situations, we are working on an SSD module that can accept CF cards with an adaptor... customer friendly.

There is no reason to offer 5K at 120 fps if you have to record RECODE 5 (or a TON of compression) and get less than acceptable results. Thank heaven for REDCODE. Can you imagine recording uncompressed 5K?

Jim

People used to shoot REDCODE 28, which is about 10:1 compression. Then we moved to REDCODE 36, about 8:1 compression. Then to REDCODE 42 which is about 7.5:1. Each of these jumps chews up cards. Now we think the new "standard" will be 5:1. This is twice the data as the original RED ONE at any given resolution and frame rate. 5K is 60% more data than 4K. Then add in high frame rates and it is pretty easy to see that a CF card will choke, roll over and die. Good news is Moore's law.

Jim

Am I the only one up?

Jim

i prefer ssd drives, the cf cards were cool back then, but having the possibility to shoot 5k 100 fps needs better recording options than cf.
and redcode 5:1 should satisty the last naysayers :)
my cf cards are waiting for the proxy module.
i realise my weirdo english is back, i am writing whipe beeing on set with
a lot of mx cameras right now...hehe

Just you and me, wanna share any secrets? : )

Sure... even with SSD's you can only record 5K @ 120fps with REDCODE 12:1. Good thing the sensor and system is so clean! It looks really great. But it showcases the need for faster media. We are working on a lot of things to help out. Did I mention that early in the RED ONE program 10:1 was all you could do? And Ché was shot in its entirety at 12:1?

EPIC is possible because of REDCODE. Without it we would be shooting to refrigerator drives or some dopey RGB codec.

Jim

Yes Moore's Law for the win! I'm dreaming of 1.8 mags with the capacity and price point of RED Drives.

Currently, with the SSDs you can shoot 5K @ 24fps at REDCODE 3:1... although I shoot 5:1. 5K @ 24fps HDRx is 6:1 (makes sense... twice 3:1).

Jim

EPIC without SSD doesn't make sense. So do we have to pay about $2,000 more for Stage 2 package or is it to early to ask this question?
