Is there as way to format the SSD's without having the camera available? If not, can I make that a feature request if at all possible? In my workflow I like to format my cards right away after I copy them. If I am turning and burning the cards it is nice to have them ready to go once they are back in the camera so I don't have to take more time to format.

I wasn't sure if this would be a Redcine-X or a 3rd party request.

Formatting in the camera allows the metadata header denoting camera and roll number to be incremented. I don't believe this is possible in r3d manager. Also I think it would add confusion to what roll numbers were shot, transferred, etc. Doesn't seem like a good workflow.

I haven't tried R3D manager yet, I will have to look into that. I number and label things a bit differently for what I do so most times I manually put in that info.

But if your camera won't boot and you need to reinstall firmware, formatting the SSD on a computer is indispensable.

R3D Data Manager can format media for the Red One, including SSDs. Formatting is not available for the Epic/Scarlet. But to format mags with R3D Data Manager, the media must first have been formatted on camera. So the recommended workflow is to format at the beginning of a day on camera, then increment roll numbers using R3D Data Manager.

Is Epic and Scarlet support in the pipeline for future versions?

The reasoning behind my questions is if I am rotating through cards on a continuous shoot I don't want to have to pause for too long to format in camera.

Really? I always had to format my CF cards before installing firmware on my R1. I just assumed it was the same with my Epic SSD's.

Nope. I never reformat for firmware, just stick it on the first SSD I find. Doesn't affect the clips in any way.

Pretty sure I never reformatted CFs before putting firmware on either.

Are you sure it isn't just a procedure you did? I'm sure it says to format in the instructions, but that is probably just to enfore you were using formatted media.

Is it possible to delete files off a REDMAG so that when you place it in the EPIC and perform Format, you dont get the warning that there are clips on it?

I was told that this was possible but cant find how to do it.

Just delete all the files on the RedMag on the computer.

Ive done that in the past and didnt realize it works.

I was asked to do this on set and for some reason the Mac wouldnt let me delete.

It's the red watch dog...
on the top bar next to the clockyou got a little red icon you can click it and set the mag to read write. I think that should allow you to remove files.

Edit tried and it works.

but I think, I read someplace that if you do so you should format the mag before further capture. so the mag is not fragmented. the cameras do not like fragmented ssd's and that is also the reason why we can not delete clips in camera, without deleting all clips on the card.

Thanks Bjorn I have used that a few times and forgot all about it during shoot.

I was using RCXPro and DoubleData so I thought maybe they were eating resources at the time.

It's important to keep in mind that the only safe thing to do with the SSD Mag after manually deleting clips off of it is to reformat in camera. That is, don't manually delete clips on the computer, remount the SSD in the camera and start recording. This could result in dropped frames.

Thanks Trent.

Yes the request on set was to confirm the Camera op that the mag requires formatting and that it has no files.
