  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Square front lomo anamorphic tests

I just got a set back from getting PL mounts. I collected them when I came across them. I have the 35mm, 50, and 80. The 35mm is a 2.8 the 50 is I believe a 2.2 and the 80 a t2.4. I'd be open to renting them, but I would want to get them dialed in a little better first. The focus barrels could be smoother, I think I'm going to have them cleaned and lubed. But keep me in mind if you need them in the future.

Nice! Has anyone tried to use an Iscorama? Maybe with Red Prime lens ?
Just curious...

This footage was shot on an mx, right? How much colour correction was done (or is there that much saturation coming straight outta the lenses)? They definitely look thick and creamy, I'd just be worried about their resolving power.

No CC. I adjusted the curve. Crushed the blacks only for most shots. 800 asa with an ND 1.2 for the exteriors. Interiors were all wide open. If i need sharp i can always stop down. Interiors were asa 1600. Lenses are really crisp around a 4, witness the first shot. Before the h264 compression you could see all the super fine spiderwebs between the flowers.

Gorgeous! I wish this stuff came up more in Oz.

I am currently having a whole set of square fronts meticulously restored, 30, 50 and 80mm. All coatings are absolutely perfect, just getting rehoused and converted to PL mount.
This restoration is being performed in Australia by a very specialised motion picture engineer so they will be like new and absolutely fantastic.

They should be ready in a month as I sourced all of the stainless steel mounts in australia and the engineer is manufacturing new lens casings and focus/iris rings.

The flares/ colour and especially the look out of these Lomo lenses in second to none and are sharp as a tack. I have bought about 9 lenses to get to 3 perfect ones, it has been a special project for me as I absolutely love the look of anamorphics. So I will post up some shots when they are completed, I am in two minds about renting these out as i haven't been able to find a set in Sydney anywhere. But you never know!

That sounds really cool. I'd love to see pictures of them when they are done. Is Steve Morton doing the work?

Fantastic Adam. Keep us in the loop. Can't wait to see some images.

Hey Adam, how bad are the other 6 and have you already gotten rid of them?

I actually re-watched your clip Nick and I can't get over the 'thickness'... love it.

I bought the stainless steel mounts from him and also the 80mm lens.

Steve doesn't rework square fronts as there is a lot of work that needs to get done. He reworks the round fronts as they are straight forward.

Peter Grabavich is doing it for me, he is an old family friend and is about 73 years old and has been fixing and engineering motion picture cameras and lenses all his life. He needs to make a barrel and gear system for the 30mm as the squarefront anamorhphic needs focusing at the same time as the lomo35mm lens. Very complicated but he has done it!

Re the other lenses I wouldn't like to sell them to anyone on RED forum as they need re coating and parts. I have a 30mm left and 50mm left. The other ones we used for parts.

So if you have a 30mm with the separate front anamorphic attachment, then you probably have the old style from an old oct 18 konvas. My set is the newer style where the lenses are all self contained. The 35mm is from the mid 80's. I am not sure when they stopped making the square fronts. The latest one I have personally seen was I think '87. They are not all that rare, but the lens caps sucked, and a lot of them have wear marks on the front elements. Plus soviet warehouses leak like a son of a bitch and a lot of them have fungus and water issues. I am pretty sure Sergey has at least one set for sale. Rafcamera also has them every now and again. I wish I had bought a bunch more back when they were $200 bucks a pop.

I've been very happy with Peter's work on my Lomos- some heavy machining of mounts, cleaning and rebuilding. The lenses are beautifully sharp, here is a recent test in Cradle Mountain TAS with a squarefront...

There is some highres stills linked below the video.

Some excellent shots in there Ev, but who is this "Peter" who restored your Lomos? I've got one or two lenses that are in need of a bit of work.

Cheers Tim, I meant to quote Adam's post. Peter is a lens/camera tech based south of Sydney. Highly recommended if you need conversions or servicing- meticulous work and has a lot of interesting history and knowledge.
His business is Photographic & General Instruments.

btw, how do I adjust my settings/details etc. I get a 'you do not have permissions' dialogue.

I'm always interested in these Lomo anamorphic lenses. I just need to figure out would to get them mounted on my 5D2 so I can shoot some timelapse with them. I wonder how much coverage I could get on a full framed sensor.
