  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attached are a couple of quick tests using an older E-EF speedbooster (not ultra as that bigger). Nearly fits without OLPF housing removed. (of course you have to be very careful here) - Just wanted to see if there would be enough room to fashion a dumb EF lens mount to this, will have to 3D print one. Shots are 'Whacked' so no mount and a bit of tilt and shift distortions to be assumed.

Going by tests from Full Frame 35mm (Sony A7s) 5k now matches Full Frame 35mm. 6k is porthole of course. A 35mm at 4k is about a 50mm on full frame (single picture).

Sometimes I really want higher frame rates at without so much crop, and extra speed is a nice touch.

Custom OLPF (not shown) is tacked onto the front glass of the speedbooster although this has some IR cut I used a IR cut filter (52mm) on this Nikon 35mm Lens.
To do. Create a housing for the speed booster modded version of OLPF option so we don't loose OLPF and IR cut. Create a lens mount to accommodate the new flange distance.

Of course I would love metabones to do this, even if a custom low order amount was placed.

Cool test. I'm guessing the whacked/tilt-shifting is because nothing is machined (like you were holding it together by hand)?

As much as I'd love for something like this to materialize, I'm starting to think it'd be simpler/easier/cheaper to just get a Sony/E-mount camera and a off-the-shelf speedbooster that literally clicks on/off the camera like a lens swap (rather than having to remove/replace the mount). Speaking of which, I'd love to compare an A7sII-FF35 4k frame to an A7sII-in-S35mode-with-Speedbooster 4k frame. They should have close FOV, but be 1stop brighter, and (most interesting) to see what happens to resolution and apparent sharpness.

Really cool!

As I understand it´s very tight to fit a speedboats onto the epic dragon, and I don't know about the space in the "sensor /olpf" cavity for weapon but I can only imagine RED made some extra room, and for sure the 8k version there of must have a lot more room.

So why can not red make a speed boasted OLPF / large format kind of mount?

for the 8k weapon that would be so cool. Extra light and massive field of view on long lenses.

I now have adapted an old nikon mount, added a circular OLPF and have the speedbooster element set at the right distance to allow infinity. I don't have to whack it now. Will machine a housing tomorrow to stabilise the mount. Looking very nice though.

Wow, James you just opened the door...keep us posted....proof that IT'S POSSIBLE!!!!!

Very, very exciting...

Thanks again for doing this!

If you can make a working product out of it that will mount on raven it'll sell like hot cakes

4k WS 10:1 with Cheap Nikon 35mm at F2. - Light fading fast here now.

Yeah, that looks pretty awesome (very low con! What is this OLPF you're using? It looks like just a <52mm filter?)

And just so I'm clear; you're removing the OLPF in order to sit the Speedbooster element (one ripped from an actual unit) at the proper distance from the sensor, inside the sensor cavity, right?

OLPF was one I had made in the days of the 5Dmk2. It's mounted behind the lens now, also trying the IR cut filter from the BMCC 4k, its round and that helps from speedy testing. This filter shown in the first photos was just a stop gap so I could see a half colour correct picture. - Yes removed the removable olpf in this case the 'low light' version. Used the 'Standard' OLPF setting in the camera to balance best. The flange gap for the speed booster element is set at the correct distance, that was just hit and miss. Had to make sure I get get a hair past infinity.
Going to fashion a lens mount tomorrow so I can go shoot something. Just in case anyone is wondering, behind the RED olpf insert is another optical glass panel. So its not open to the sensor directly.

So, in theory a final product would consist of a custom olpf-frame that clears enough space to fit the speedbooster between sensor? I guess the olpf-filter itself can still be placed in front of the sensor if integrated into a new kind of framing. Maybe thats something Kippertie could do... Just thinking out loud.

Does the lens-mount really need to be modified? Becaus the holy grail would be something that can be used with existing lens-mounts (would like to stay EF with electronic control)... Thinkable?

Also don't forget, Metabones has a few different speedboosters. Those optics from the BMPCC-version are interesting too. :)

Even if it could be possible to make a Speedbooster/OLPF combo in the space of the OLPF cavity, it's main potential target (4k's RAVEN) wouldn't allow to change the OLPF wich is to bad. I would have jumped on this option otherwise.

Interesting testing.

Yes, its ironic really that the best target (raven) for this concept is not applicable... you'd be better off starting from scratch with an EF mount full frame to aps-c block.

In a related zone we have a design for a 2x Anamorphic OLPF that's shelved currently. It was intended for Dragon, but the OLPF frame is not an easy area to work with optically due to the space limitations, and we figured that anything like this was best left for the Weapon generation which gives us some more space and flexibility.

big +1

I super wish RED or Metabones, or SOMEONE, would make an EF-EF speedbooster...

...hence why I started the RED EYE thread.
