  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

speedbooster from metabones

Sorcery.

I can't wrap my head around the science of how this could work, even in a "back of the envelope" understanding. But by all accounts it seems like a legitimate product by a legitimate company that's been created by legitimate people . . .

I contacted them about a EF to EF version, but got a reply that there is not enough depth possible in the mount for that unfortunately, so that one is not going to come out.

"Other mount combinations will follow shortly afterwards. Leica R, ALPA, Contarex, Contax C/Y and Nikon F (with aperture control for G lenses) will be supported, as will Micro 4/3 and Fuji X-mount cameras. Support for other mounts will be added in the future."

In theory, if it was designed correctly, using a Leica M mount with a focal reducer could work with EF or any FF35 lens. It would work slightly different though.

I believe it's possible to make a custom E-Mount to fit over Epic and Scarlet as well. The flange focal length is pretty damn shallow though.

I guess this is as good time as any- we have Nikon ProLock with glass RedUCER (same as the booster- but the original description) for the Epic/Scarlet.

Would Canon -> Epic mount with reducer work too or is there not enough space due to flange focus distance?

Dude, now combine that with your electronic focus control and CONTROL THE WORLD! Bwahahaha!

Actually, how about a reducer glass that's like 1.3x instead of 1.5x. So you can put a Nikon lens on and it will scale it down to approx Epic FF35 size?

Or is that actually a totally stupid idea and the optical glass will get in the way of image quality?

Anyway, maybe an interesting option for super high speed crop on an Epic? Because you're often starved for light there anyway, and not at full 5K resolution. Also for Scarlet?

I've been experimenting with this on my own as well.

The most simple way to explain it, is that it's the opposite of a tele-extender. Since FF glass image circle is much larger than some sensors, you can condense the light/image circle into a smaller area, thus being more concentrated and 'brighter'. People use these types of lenses in telescopes. They are called focal reducers.

I hope these guys have done something I had missed, because I have been experimenting with Nikon lenses for a couple months now, taking apart many a decent lens (would make some people sick here) and I've found that although I get some decent results with rear mounted, the best results seem to be if you get these lens elements inside the optical assembly of the lens, which is clearly too small in photography and cinema lenses. Telescopes can do it because there is a great amount of room in the very long and telephoto optical path.

Best of luck to these guys. Through my work, I've found that I could gain speed with my experiments, but I could never solve some pretty wicked side effects on the edges of the lens.

Phil, Do you think they could make an adapter to make a FF lens cover the 2K range of the scarlet? Would make 60fps AWESOME! or even 1K maybe? Id buy one asap!

You can shoot with quite a few S-16 lenses on Scarlet @ 3K, which is very close to µFT. So, yes, they could make such an adapter – if they see a market for it.

I'll give you the same answer I got when I tried getting 3 custom anamorphic lenses made.

"Anything is possible if you have the money to do it."

That said, it would depend largely on the market demand if anybody would make one. The key bit is that the reducer would need to be mounted behind the lens and a shallower lens mount would be needed.

This makes me excited to see Black Magic's Camera using EF lenses without a 2.3x Crop factor! Would make that BMC a viable camera IMO.

Wow, really? My only major gripe with that camera is its stupidly small sensor but if this adapter can fix it (even a little), then I am totally sold.

Is there any way to make one for the Canon mount ? Is that possible ? One that would convert FF lenses to Epic's 5K window (or maybe Dragon's 6K window)...

Yes It should be :)
There is awfully little room in that mount. I know it works with the Nikon ProLock- I've tried it. Kind of forgot about that- hmm. I have the parts somewhere so I can check.
