  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am somewhat new to Resolve, but have a question regarding speed of playback and would like some input as far as workflow. I have a Mac Pro system with a cubix expander box and 2 GeForce GTX 980 cards and a 570 as well, cpu is dual 6 core 3.33 ghz. I have some footage shot at 6k at 59.94 fps, timeline is set the same. I am having very jittery and slow playback on the timeline. I have also tried 4k footage with the same result. I have tried changing the proxy mode but it has little effect. Optimizing to 422 1080 and enabling smart cache does help, but I would have to let it run all night for an hour of footage. Am I missing something? I tried transcoding to 4444 but it was the same issue. I have a 12g decklink card so the point is to be able to edit at and display 4k to my monitor, so downsizing smaller isn't what I want to do. Are 2 980's not enough power? Thanks!

A single 6 core is very little for decompressing and thats probably the first speed restriction. For 6K r3d i recommend dual 14 core.
Dual GTX980 is fair but remember you need to debayer then apply grades so they to will become exhausted with 4K timelines.

Try making optimised media for 10 clips, into ProRes 4K 4x4 or DNx and see what speed you have then.
I'm also assuming you have a fast raid and not a dual drive stage system.
