Hey guys,

I'm having issues with a project I just edited in FCP7 and shot on Red Epic. I transcoded to pro-res HQ and edited with the pro-res in final cut. My project has a lot of speed ramps in it. Its a music video and simply the style of my editing. My question is- what is the best way to roundtrip to Resolve 9 and back while keeping the speed ramps in tact. Is there a known solution or workflow that works best other than color grading the pro-rez files. I really need the ability to reference and grade from the R3D's.

From everything I have seen, you may have a problem round tripping with the speed changes. You may have to add them back in after the grading. :-(

Still hoping Adobe might integrate Speedgrade someday into Premiere and After Effects, that would be the Holy Grail of post production. Right now if you are adding any types of effects you have to color grade those files before hand. They will not translate into Resolve or Speedgrade. You could encode the file into a lossless codec and try an EDL?

Hi Jon -

This won't help you with your immediate problem - but just want to note that the Speed ramp and R3d workflow in FCP X is pretty awesome. Obviously, you don't have the power of resolve with motion tracked masks - but you can do some pretty decent primary and secondary corrections in app. For me, not having the disk speed requirements and transcoding time requirements has been a big deal - I'm getting decent playback at 1/4 debayer with 3-4 tracks off a single 3tb drive in a mac pro. (Note that if you were doing a music vid, you'd probably want the audio file to be the primary storyline).

At any rate, I'm commenting just so I can see what the solution is as I'm sure it will affect me eventually sending FCP X XML through resolve. And I'd love to see your work for Mr. Frank P...

Cheers.

It would be nice indeed. I'm most likely switching over to Premiere CS6 after this project. It handles R3D's beautifully! I love the ability to leverage the GPU.

In any case, I seem to be having some luck getting resolve to interpret the speed ramps from FCP 7 XML. All of my ramps are increasing speed and never slowing down footage. I think Resolve may have a problem with slowing things down and the interpolation that goes along with it. That is my theory at least... My plan is to just render out from Resolve into a Pro-Rez quicktime, import back into FCP and add the audio and song. If that doesn't work its back to the drawing board.

Curious Jon, are you using Resolve 9? I still haven't tried any ramping in Resolve 9, I'm wondering if they fixed the issue? And nice job on the commercial.
