  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Soylent?? ...Really???

The maltodextrin is just glucose, and very rapidly turned into blood sugar. That is inflammatory and as we know, diabetics with their high levels of blood glucose (even under drug control) have a much increased heart attack rate. Grapeseed oil is an industrial seed oil and also highly inflammatory, which again leads to arterial damage. The oats are also rapidly turned to blood glucose.

The (rather famous) Framingham heart study showed that dietary cholesterol was not an issue. Our bodies do indeed need fat (and protein), and if you're going to ingest any significant amount of carbohydrate it should be of the forms that are neither high in fructose nor are turned rapidly to blood glucose.

It appears the engineer who came up with this is basing his diet on very outmoded dietary models, indeed the same models that have lead to obesity and heart disease in our populations.

I'm happy to learn you are as well-read and knowledgeable about what it takes to run a body as you are about what it takes to run a camera or a Red Ray Player.

I agree with you that cholesterol isn't the issue, while the ratio between HDL and LDL cholesterol is. I remember reading a study done during the great cholesterol scare of decades past when we were told not to eat eggs because of the cholesterol in them. The study had individuals eating a dozen eggs or so per day and then measured their cholesterol. Initially, the participant's cholesterol rose. But after a period of adjustment, their cholesterol came back down to normal levels even with the large number of eggs in their diet.

And while I applaud the straightforward approach to reducing "food" to the status of fuel for the body, I disagree that doing that can maximize life-span. Life is a trade-off. If we work too hard (read: stress our body and mind Too Much) indulge ourselves in food and drink in excess (some alcohol may be beneficial... re: a study on C Elegans (nematode used in research) showed that a tiny amount of a solvent like alcohol extended the life span of the worm. (This research could indicate the worm in the bottle of Mezcal is still alive, just pickled so it looks dead '-)

What I'm getting at is, there's too much edible diversity missing from the formula to maximize our individual life span. Maybe Soylent would work as a substitute for a meal, but as Graeme points out there may be things in it that aren't conducive to best practices. Of course, if you are going to eat fast food instead, maybe the Soylent is a better choice.

But from my point of view, I need to ensure the foods I do eat are nutrient diverse and dense. Reason is, I have recently adopted a 2 random day per week fast and the other 5 days are food days. I've done this after reading about it first, then watching the program "Eat, Fast, and live longer" by Michael Morley. That really showed the effect food as calories, and protein specifically, has on the well-being of the body... the protein in excess possibly having a negative effect on one's lifespan (The good news is, hard work keeps the mind off one's hunger during the fast days)

And since I'm eating less food now, I just want to make sure my body is getting sufficient amounts of the really important foods and condiments, herbs and spices, that can protect and enhance one's health status.

"I agree with you that cholesterol isn't the issue, while the ratio between HDL and LDL cholesterol is." - it's a better proxy for heart disease outcomes, but in the end it's still an inadequate disease marker. The major issue is that presence of cholesterol in arterial plaque is like presence of yellow stains on fingertips is strongly correlated with heart and lung disease. But nobody is suggesting yellow stains on fingers is causal (because it's the smoking that causes both the stains and the disease).

This project assumes the following:

That science currently knows everything about the best diet
That freshness adds nothing to our food
That vitamins in fresh vegetables and fruits work exactly the same for our body as added vitamins
That chewing food does nothing for our health

All these points are highly debatable. The science of diets is changing on an almost day by day basis.

Then there's this: lately there's been research that shows that old people who are able to chew their own food have a lesser chance of dementia. Here is an article: http://www.myhealthwire.com/news/mind-body/235 I could just as well be that drinking your meals instead of properly chewing them could be bad for your brain. Not something I would be willing to risk for the sake of convenience. I like food too much anyway.

You are right, thats why we should eat at Mc Donalds instead. :)

No but really those processed foods that we eat at times they are probably just as bad as this stuff, no fresh vitamines and stuff but atleast these guys are trying to make a milk shake that is good for you. That is something you can not say about that many other providers of processed foods...

So for me if I eat this in the morning inestead of kellog's frosties with extra sugar and milk with added flawor of strawberry... I think this stuff is porbably better for me, the same goes for most of the industry made bread etc.

So to me, eating cheap but well balanced watered down powder 2 times a day and then having a good meal for dinner would be really nice. I usually skip breakfast as it is now and lunch kind of get's in a squeeze at times as well... so if I could gulp down a bottle of this formula and that got my batteries somewhat charged I would be more than happy.

When I was a kind I read about astronauts in some sience fiction book and they ate protein cubes so they did not have to do number two or think of food at all, I all ready then though that was a great idea..

Not sure if this is what you are saying, but cholesterol in arterial plaque may not be a result of having too much cholesterol in the body, but having a combination of the cholesterol and an outside modifier like stress for instance, being the cause for the plaque deposits.

Everybody has missed the obvious point... that we are human.

This is reducing humans to livestock. Maximising efficiency/cost ratios over... well... what it means to be human. I don't know why this bothers me so much. It just does.

Food, along with sex and art are some of the great pleasures in life, and if we are to reduce them all to a mere function of being a human-machine, then we are denying what it is to be truly human.

And the fact that they are calling this product Soylent, is just as disturbing... it is like calling a military robotics company Cyberdyne...

This reminds me... time for my food day ritual of drinkeating an oversized mug of a concoction of a tblspoon of Diamond V XPC, a scoop of RAW (caps are mine '-) Organic Green Super Food, a big dash of Vitamin C Powder, A big dash of L Arginine, tspoon of L Glutamic Acid, (1) 100 milligram opened capsule contents of Niacin, dash of Ceylon Cinnamon, dash of powdered Ginger, two small scoops of Coconut Sugar (Glycemic Index of only 35 while refined sugar is somewhere in the high seventies, low eighties IIRC), about 2 tblspoons of Organic Raw Cacao powder, a tspoon of MSM powder, large dash of Acerola, and after adding hot water to stir and mix the ingredients, a dash of Angostura bitters along with a good sized splash of Pomegranate and Black Cherry juices... sans any other ingredients or preservatives.

EDIT: ALMOST FORGOT... ONE SCOOP OF MEGA MEN MAXIMUM NUTRITION

Yummy! I LIVE FOR THIS STUFF!

Oh, I do drink the heavy broth slowly, otherwise the Niacin will cause flushing of the skin if taken above a threshold of some 40 milligrams all at once.

Can't really call this a replacement meal since I have no schedule for eating a "meal" other than when the mood strikes me. However I do eat a nice-sized bowl of oatmeal with Ceylon cinnamon, Nutmeg powder, Allspice powder, and Ginger powder plus a good helping of Olive Oil/Coconut Oil stirred in and sweetened with a goodly number of raisins, on a schedule... I eat this with coconut milk poured over before starting a fast and immediately after breaking the 24 hour fast. Keeps your gut having something to do.

WHat the?

I will just shut up now :)

Heh, heh... didn't mean to cause that reaction from you Ivan. It's all about different strokes. While just about everyone CAN do what I choose to do, few make that choice. And the good life is all about having choices. '-)

Right on!

But this still doesn't address the fact of the TERRIBLE choice of name!!

SOYLENT??

Im going to create an artificial chicken sandwhich! (made from healthy ingredients, of course)

I'll call it... Cock... .... toas... ..tone. :willy_nilly:

Mate, you were just awaiting your first chance to utter the word "cock" today, weren't you? :)

When I first saw the name of the movie, I assumed that Soylent Green was Soybean based. It was only later that someone told me it was recycled humans (Assuming they were healthy when recycled, they should provide all the nutrients a human needs when fed the recycled product '-).

But that's one reason I wouldn't be a user of the new product Soylent, is because it DOES contain soy. Soy's for girls.

And nutritious human is for men?

I think I missed a meeting... :)

Heh, heh, no... soy is a known estrogen agonist. And while there's nothing wrong with an estrogen yin and yang, assigning the yin to the male side of the oneness and yang to the feminine side, I just think that a society with a primarily estrogen yang and androgen yin (with a little testosterone in the mix) is the better model.

I'm sure a lot of women would disagree with me and prefer more estrogen in their men so they could go shopping with them to help them pick out pretty shoes... '-)

Time to neutralise the effects of soy with tiger penis soup then Elsie!

I do hope you are talking about SYNTHESIZED Tiger Penis... For while I don't foresee myself ever being face to face with a Tiger, I wouldn't want them to go extinct and then deprive others of the opportunity to be eaten by a man eating Tiger.
