  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sound Devices PIX 240 ProRes/DNxHD Video Recorder with EPIC

The Pix would be perfect if it showed thumbnails of recorded media for playback.

+100

The PIX has come so far since its release...lots of fantastic improvements to monitor viewing quality, feature set, etc. My biggest gripe is lack of thumbnails when perusing recorded clips, as searching by clip name is almost never what I'll remember about a given take. Perhaps this could be something in the works?

WOW. Super informative. THX

Does the drift apply if you are running audio via SDI? or just when you are running audio via xlr directly into the pix?

Its not drift it's offset. And yes if you read above there are different offsets depending where the audio is coming from. Most any camera is going to feed video later than audio that is fed directly via xlr into pix. If audio is early on sdi stream then that is a camera "flaw" but many cameras have it. Good news is it is easily correctable in pix, or if you prefer, in post.

It is easy to correct in the PIX. The Aja KiPro Mini shows a similar offset, but it doesn't offer such a correction (or I didn't find it yet).

Did anybody see the pix 240i yet?
Is the new display worth the extra bucks?

Thanks for sharing!!

What do you guys think of the latest from Video Devices? Pretty neat device from them.

Do they record timecode and clip-names reliable enough to be used for offline editing? If so, it might be a good addition to the Epic Dragon if you don't have the Weapon upgrade.

Christoffer they dont.

I find it strange that everyone is so happy about using external recorders, and say that they have a workflow using them... Dragon and epic MX does not trigger those tings reliably, i.e time code is off by +-3 frames. It´s not a constant so some clips will be correct others will not so according to my testsings it will be around +-3... The only reliable way is to use them and record with tc in in picuture and then use a NLE to reformat the TC to the correct TC before edting. That has to be done manually, not a big thing but quite frustrating and it feels a bit oldscool to sit there and do it. To me even on a slow computer I feel I rather render proxies at 1/4 debayer and proress proxy. which is not very heavy to process. Then I know the proxies have the right TC, and I do not need the TC in frame and it works well with overcranked footage etc. Using the external recorders for offline edting files is a hassle, to me far bigger than dealing with r3ds... I think this sync thing is the reason why red cancled the proress module, as it also took the signal from the video out which is not accurate to the video captured.

That's just too bad. Where is the issue at Björn? The SDI/HDMI out? Can it be resolved?

I use the PIX240 to act as my TC generator and jam/gen lock my DSMC.
I have not had any issues with TC having different offsets between clips (due to trigger inconsistency) and am happy with the proxies it creates for the offline.
As shame the new video devices do not offer TC/synch ports.
