  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We've carefully examined the file you uploaded and can't see any obvious motion artifacts or other problems. There is motion blur due to slow shutter speed but that is to be expected.
It would be good to find out specifics from the engineer on how they are assessing this footage especially since they have also failed the original RedCine-transcoded R3D files from the Scarlet. This indicates there isn't a specific problem with the PIX. Having said that, we'd be happy to have a discussion with the engineer to find out exactly what his concerns are.

PIX Firmware 1.08 Released

Firmware revision 1.08 is now available for the PIX. Update your units as soon as practical.

Sound Devices PIX 220 and PIX 240 firmware revision 1.08 provides the following new features and changes. Note: Features and changes that apply only to the PIX 240 or only to the PIX 220 are labeled as such.

New: Ability to start and stop recording from external, record-run timecode while the timecode mode of the PIX recorder is set to freerun or 24hr run timecode mode. This is useful when working with cameras that only support SDI timecode but not SDI start/stop flags and when the application calls for free-run timecode rather than rec-run timecode (i.e. any application where multiple devices are TC jammed).
Change: Drop frame timecode is displayed with semi-colon between second and frames field.
Change (PIX 240): Freerun timecode backup when all power is removed reduced to 2 hours.
Change (PIX 240): TC LED blinks red to inform user to re-jam or reset freerun timecode. This will happen when the timecode backup has reset after 2hrs or if a change in video frame rate affects timecode.
Change: SSD and CF OSD fields can now be toggled individually.
Change (PIX 240): Video Input factory default changed to SDI (240 only); Timecode Mode factory default changed to Ext TC (SDI, HDMI).
Change (PIX 240): 24h Run Timecode Mode replaced with new “Jam Time of Day” menu. This is a more reliable way to maintain ultra-accurate TOD timecode over power cycles.
Fix (PIX 240): Tri-Level Sync Out issues resolved.
Fix: RED EPIC boot up with PIX attached could cause corruption in PIX recordings.
Fix: Lock button menu (press FILES + MENU) no longer wraps around.
Fix: Play-Pause or shuttle mode causes top line artifact in LCD with interlaced input.
Fix: OSD File Resolution/Rate field now always shows the File Resolution/Rate setting even when there is no video input.
Fix (PIX 220): HDMI intermittent record triggering from Sony NXCAM 1080i50 video.
Fix (PIX 240): +1 frame offset on rec-run stationary timecode over SDI.
Fix: -2 frame start timecode offset in recorded file when receiving stationary Ext TC.
Fix (PIX 240): SDI output timecode glitch when Record button is pressed.
Fix (PIX 240): Timecode output falls behind the OSD and SDI Output timecode when in rec-run mode.
Fix: Rec-run timecode was not continuous from file to file.
Fix: More reliable handling of loss of video input: When video input is lost, PIX recorder stays in record-pending until video signal reappears, then resumes recording into a new file. 10 second timeout has been removed.
 
Glad to see Sound Devices continually working to improve the PIX240's performance.

Having worked a lot with the PIX now, who could one speak to about other features to potentially be added? This box has so much promise, just a few more tweaks and it could be perfect...
 
Thank you to Sound device.
Yesterday, I had a nightmare with my Pix : I recorded a camera in the surgeon theatre during more than an hour. Then I had a lost signal, but the pix was still recording with red button on, time code and so on. At the end, i lost everything after 6 min and had only a green screen.
I was so unhappy that i sweared to not use it again before the fix. And the fix is here today. Bad luck for me, but good move from Sound device.

Thanks for how professional you guys are at Sound Devices getting these fixes so quickly.
What about the Epic zoom/expanded focus causing corrupted recordings? Has that been fixed with this update?

What are you waiting for?
FAB device, esp for us Scarlet-users who can't (yet anyway) afford the admission to RED SSDs. My whole PIX kit was less than 1 256GB RED SSD. Love mine and tech support has been 1st class. If you haven't seen/handled one of these little magic boxes, find one - you will be stunned at the quality of construction. As solid as RED. Can't beat that!

I was holding off because of all the kinks I've been hearing in this thread. Are these just isolated incidents and does the pix240 work out of the box with my scarlet?

Haven't been involved in the Epic testing (amazingly we only have one...). I dropped our Epic guys a note to see if this helps with the Zoom SDI glitch issue:

Fix: RED EPIC boot up with PIX attached could cause corruption in PIX recordings.

The reply on our forums:

The fix for the RED Epic boot up corruption implemented in PIX v1.08 improves our handling of the Epic's Magnify feature. You should no longer see frame corruption continue to occur after the Epic's Magnify feature has been activated/deactivated.
That being said, we do not advise activating/deactivating Magnify when the PIX is recording. The Epic's SDI output signal and clocking is altered when Magnify is activated/deactivated.
 
Firmware revision 1.09 is now available for the PIX.

Please update your units as soon as practical.

Fixed: Issue with ProRes files which could produce 'banding' of the image with very low-level exposures.

Could be nice to get a how to setup tutorial from some users using GEnlock and Timecode Cable with the PIX 240. because we are experience +1-1 frame offset, some bad green glitches and above all SDI Flag working randomly. Thank you for your support because I'm stucked right now

Just to follow up here as well:

You can set an offset in the PIX Timecode/Sync menu to align your file timecode with the Red files.

We are going to look into the SDI flags not working all the time.

Make sure your firmware is updated to 1.09.
 
People! 2.0 firm-ware is OUT! some neat features (as always).
