  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sound Devices PIX 240 ProRes/DNxHD Video Recorder with EPIC

Talking about the Sound Devices PIX:
What about the screen quality? Can it be used as a field monitor?
I have used an Atomos Samurai once and the quality of the screen was really bad.

I would not use Pix240 screen for color or exposure judgement. only framing, and only if audio meters are not displayed as they overlay over top of frame. it is nice it has a screen, but it is not a useful monitor. no adjustments to the image except brightness. but considering everything else it does, eh, i'm not too upset.

I got one, it works great for offline format. Reads the epic's metadata and tc.

I used the PIX on a low budget feature in Italy, and it essentially served as the director's monitor (we didn't have the budget or crew to manage a 17")...as a panel, it's far from the ideal (fairly washed out, no focus assist or exposure tools), but as a basic video tap / framing tool, it will suffice. One added bonus is the director/scriptie, etc can check playback without tying up the camera.

Cute huh? It's got prores/DNX-HD on board and is about the same size as a stock Alexa :001_tt2:
It just uses a slightly modified Zacuto rail piece to connect the pix, very solid too, no problem for handheld etc.

Love it!
i'm only gonna add for numbers to it...... 2575

Congrats!

Evin - how good is the resolution of the PIX240 screen? Could it be used as a focus-puller's monitor?

I'm not Evin, but IMHO it's not good enough for that, just OK for framing.

I'm getting a 1 frame offset on the recorded pix file. Anyone else have this? It's easy to fix in editing but I'm probably just doing something wrong. You can check it by outputting a "preview" signal on the sdi which burns in the epic timecode. The timecode does not drift, just is one frame off.

Shane

What are your timecode settings on the PIX?

Matt, it's on Ext TC,( hdmi, SDI)

It's possible that the PIX and the Epic are just enough out of phase that the timecode is out one frame.

Try hitting the Epic with GenLock from the PIX sync output.

That's what I figured I'd have to do. I'll need to pick up a cable for that.

The PIX is a great little device, no doubt, but it's NOT a substitute for a good monitor. IMHO it can't be used for critical focus. Also, it sucks power like there's no tomorrow :-)

EDIT: And it's a wee bit heavy. Would still love one at some point, though.

My new system of Epic to Pix is to use the Genlock and Timecode cable from the Epic to the pix. Before when I was just using SDI, I was having issues, but now it is good.

Record 300fps and Playback with PIX240 in real time ?

Record 300fps and Playback with PIX240 in real time ?

since the Epic is still not capable of playback in my local rental house - Is there any way to record 300fps on the epic, and use the pix240 for playback in real time at least ?
