  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony and Panasonic - impact on RED!

Does this camera even exist or are we saying the blue prints are a whole lot better. If so I can envision a 4:4:4 32bit float version.

I have to say I didn't appreciate seeing the amazing Scarlet/Epic brochure a couple of years ago with none of the cams to come to a fruition.

Okay... I'll check back in a couple of years. Until then I'm going with the AF100...

Fair enough to each his own, but I would never write off a company for so little especially when they produce products that our entire industry revolve around all these cameras are tools or different paint brushes to be used in different places and ways, writing one off in this way is not the way I would go (I know you are not fully writing it off just commenting on the tone of your post). As far as Red marketing goes either you get it or you don't, it's not their fault that people jumped to conclusions and built future plans and shoots around a proposed camera still in a concept faze, and there has never been an announced release date for any of these camera's just estimates.

Just to make sure you know, epic exists, scarlet fixed exists, now the s35 scarlet as you point out most likely does not though it is going to be released after these cameras and it's development is directly related to epic. But look at it however you want to, but no matter what we all benefit from red being in this industry and the fact they announced these cameras when they did.

I don't understand why people feel the need to knock each others preferred brands in fact I wish you luck with your af100.

Have a good one, and remember to keep on shooting.

Please Michael tell me when.

I'm going to the DV expo at the end of the month. What will I see from Red?

Steve, you are making me have a Jerry McGuire moment. You probably won't see RED at the DV Expo, but just know we are close, so close. We meaning anyone that paid attention when Jim's vision in 2007. People with vision, you gotta them space. They are working things out. Epic, Scarlet they are gonna be great! You have no idea. Go ahead and dheck out the DV Expo, but do absolute yourself in the corner. When RED comes out, they gonna come out big!

I hope you are right. I am in the industry so how could I not love what Red has done to revolutionize it?

But that being said, I have friends who are just as frustrated as I am. One particular seasoned dp friend is going with the Arri Alexa and has no interest in even looking at Red. I understand the difficult issues with bringing these cams. I do. But the marketing... I just don't get it.

I will be watching. I may sell my AF100 but fact is I have projects in the production line that need to be produced and unfortunately I can't wait around and dream.

FWIW: F35 was the scarlet I really had my eye on. I really hope it happens. If it does I'm sure it will revolutionize things once again.

to push Red into the scam corner will be a mistake, like last time :)
let soderbergh shoot his movie, let offhollywood then beat the shit out of it, let Gibby beat the shit out of epic, let some georgous AC's beat the shit out of it.
say in worst case this takes 6 months from now, thats march for stage 2,
then add four months and you should have scarlet in your hands, worst case.
dont forget.
imho renting a Red1 till Epic/scarlet comes makes sense, even buying a used R1 till then makes sense if you are a heavy shooter.
you will be able to sell the R1 without getting a too big hit in the price.

Have fun... er, uh... wait, is the AF100 even shipping yet? :confused1:

And, yes... there are shooting Scarlet prototypes and footage.

Exactly. It is never soon enough.

There is one fixed lens Scarlet prototype that I have seen. To me this option is too little too late.

The AF100 is (planned) to ship at the end of the year.

So that I can know and be an educated consumer... is there any official word (I cannot find it) when a large chip Scarlet with a pretty damn universal lens mount like the micro four thirds (which I can affix from PL mount to 30 year old SLR lenses) will ship?

You see, those features are sooooo tempting.

Well, technically, you probably haven't actually seen it. I am guessing you have only seen pictures of it. And, as we all know, if we haven't seen it, it probably doesn't exist. :001_unsure:

Oh and I'm fairly sure the f35 scarlet is still going to be made, the news it wasn't was just rumors now perhaps it wont come out but so far there is nothing indicating that and no news from Red stating that.

Not sure this is what you meant but when I mentioned Red's impact I never said that you didn't believe the same thing was just pointing it out, that no matter how you look at it Reds impact has been positive on the industry as a whole. I understand Red's marketing is new and potentially bothersome, but so is customers reactions to red acting like 12 year olds in the school yard. I've never seen more adults act like children, or people be extremely rude directly to Jim I don't know about most people but I was raised to treat people with respect (I try my best but we all have bad days). I think everyone in the industry starting out or established needs to start treating each other and the companies that make our professions possible with more respect.

Peace

Along with AVCHD and 1080i? I guess it all depends on priorities. I agree with you that you should buy the camera that best meets your needs when it is available. I am willing to shoot with what I have now and wait a little longer for the step up to Scarlet. Not everyone feels that way. (And, admittedly, I'll be more than happy with the Scarlet 2/3 Fixed as I am not all that enamored with the current trend toward a super shallow DOF. But that's me.)

The biggest thing RED could do in my opinion is come out with Scarlet S35 soon after the 2/3.

The masses have tasted large sensor cameras. And it's been proven they are willing to compromise A LOT for the benefits such sensors bring.

That's why I think Scarlet S35 coming out a year from now would be incredible.

Realistically though, I'd say Scarlet S35 is a 2012 camera.

With all due respect, why is that even reasonable? Virtually every aspect of the technology will have been worked through to get to the Epic and Scarlet Fixed models. Does it make sense that it will take 15+ months to work through the incremental design issues? Could be. But, 2011 seems much more plausible to me.

how is that when the first af100 proto was just finished relatively recently same as scarlet. Once again why the need to knock other camera to each their own, plus I have a GH1 not so universal of a mount (though nice) I'll take electronic control of nikon and canons through the red mounts (separate mounts but made by red and not 3rd party... which is better depends). But once again these are most unknowns, for now only few lenses will work with af100, now soon there will be the birger mount for it but how much will that cost. Once again there is many compromises no matter which camera you go with so why restrict yourself to just one camera or one company. Some will take quality compromises I will take delivery date compromises, why? because I have the time not everyone has that luxury so I understand the frustration of some people I just feel it is misplaced. Really how can you get mad at a company for taking to long to perfect a product that is far beyond what is available today (as a package, size, quality...), if you need to shoot there are plenty of cams out there.

Good night and good luck

Peace

I don't think you understand Red's modular system. Lens mounts are interchangeable. PL, Canon, Nikon will all be available. Canon and Nikon with full electronic controls including AF.
Personally I am so over long GOP codec video cameras. They just aren't very interesting anymore. I don't care what size the sensor is.

Well, you can call it a prediction based on the way things have been going since the original Scarlet announcement.

There's EPIC to release, then there's Scarlet 2/3 fixed. Then there's Scarlet 2/3 interchangeable.

While I understand that Scarlet S35 will probably be a stripped down EPIC, you should also consider that RED probably won't release them so close together so they won't cannibalize each other.

If Scarlet S35 is out a few months after EPIC for example, some people might pick two of them instead of an EPIC to shoot 3D, and it will still be cheaper.

If it comes out right after Scarlet 2/3 a lot of people might skip that and spend a little more in order to be able to use their DSLR lenses. (I would be one of those)

It's all very tricky.

Hopefully I'm wrong and RED will release them as fast as possible.
