The key point is time.

Panasonic will realese Panasonic Ag AF100 - in December - January - camera for digital cinema

Sony will realese at NAB 2011 - Sony 35 mm mini digital cinema

Of course RED ONE and Scarlet is better but Everybody will buy Sony or Panasonic because they are realesed!

The price for Sony is about (I think) 10- 15 000! Panasonic - 6-8k!

I have heard rrp $5000 for Panny.

Time is an issue for me... I have a project set for June 2011 and will spend my full (camera) budget getting set up. Even if Scarlet drops in March 2011 ,for instance, will I be on a crazy waiting list?

Panasonic, I can just walk in store and get one.

I'll stay hopeful until the point of no return though.

Concern noted, but we'll see.

Last time I checked, we were not in Jan 2011 yet ....

...or are we ? :-)

If by any chance you guys are planning a "stealth" release at January 2011 you guys will be responsible for the collective ecstasy of thousands of camera geeks globally.

At least March 2011 is all I ask, I have a project lined up for next year.

Hi Stuart,

But you must remember some of us have been here a long time ever hopeful of a release date! as someone said to me once, the money is on the table only once!

As ever hopeful that scarlet will be along soon, though have say my EX!R still produces great images, but not 422 or 5Omb yup got a nano flash, for those who say ahhhh but!!!

Oh forgot to say saw Steven Spielberg! yup in Devon England filming War Horse on Dartmoor, didn't quite get to say hello and cut the grit, impressive set up though. A truly great Director.

From what I've read online so far ( so you can take that with a large pinch of salt ), the Sony is likely to be in the 50k bracket. It looks like this won't really be a direct competitor to Scarlet.

Couldn't remember where I saw this this morning, but found it and here you go. When Sony first announced this camera, the speculation then was that it would be more in this price bracket, although it doesn't mean they won't have a lower end version further down the line.

** oops, fixed the link **

"Under $6k" for Panasonic AF100 in USA. However, most people will want to use the 8 bit only HD-SDI port to send to external recorder that converts to higher quality codec, and that starts at $2k for a decent solution. Then there are no lenses. But the AF100 does have EVF built-in.

Also consider that there is no IS, and that the Scarlet seems to be more suited to work off the tripod. Scarlet may have greater DR (AF100 prototype is about 10.5 stops) and it is certainly part of a much more expandable system with much much better monitoring and remote options. If it ships configured as it appears it will, it will be a greater dollar for dollar value, just look at the total cost, not base unit.

What the AF100 does have is a larger sensor, and that does carry a lot of weight for certain applications and actually be a determinant for others like EFP. So, does that triumph the other advantages of Scarlet? If filming was just about shallow DOF then we all be shooting with DSLRs, and I would stick with my GH13. Many people will use a DSLR for those situations that demand shallow DOF and then shoot the rest with Scarlet to get a much better total cinematic feel in the majority of shots.

Just the feelings of a microbudget filmmaker, but then isn't that the target audience for Scarlet? An EPIC is just a dream, so do we want to sacrifice so many other things just to get shallow DOF? I do not.

Now if I can get a Scarlet before I have to start shooting.

I'm asking because I don't know, and I'm not super familiar with all of the proposed modules:

What will an S35 Scarlet cost, spec'd out to be as functional as the AF100?

No doubt the Scarlet will have several features that makes it "better" than the AF100. We know the price of the AF100 out-of-the-box, so what kinda money will it take to make a comparably equipped S35 Scarlet? I'm excited about the AF100 because we've asked for it, and it's coming soon. But it does have some shortcomings: The 8-bit output, AVCCAM, no 120fps, and the GH1(3) stuff that I've seen just kinda looks "flat" to me.

So the real question is not what it will take to spec a S35 to be as functional as an AF100 but how much to make a AF100 do a greater fraction of what an S35 can do.

Basically, to have a VF and/or LCD, whatever control module is necessary, baseplate, record module, power module, handle, etc.

I don't think it'll be possible to spec out an AF100 to do what a Scarlet can do :)

And then what do you mean by a Scarlet? There is the fixed, there is the 2/3rds non-fixed and the proposed S35 and even more distantly proposed FF35 -- and everything subject to change.

I would personally would take the fixed Scarlet, at its anticipated pricepoint, over the larger sensored AF100 with the inevitable "hold backs" that Panasonic will put on it. Red has a record of generous free upgrades and makes cameras designed to evolve via firmware. Some clever people "evolved" the GH1 on their own, but now with the new GH1 production runs, Panasonic has stopped the hack that improved their own camera.

So remember when you buy a camera, you also "buy into" the philosophy and practices of the maker of the camera. Maybe not a deciding factor, but one to bear in mind.

Comparably equipped s35 Scarlet would be more in the $15k+ range before lenses if fitted with I/O module, EVF, LCD, etc. to match operating features of the AF100. Roughly 3 times the price. But a vastly superior camera in every respect.

Does this camera even exist or are we saying the blue prints are a whole lot better. If so I can envision a 4:4:4 32bit float version.

I have to say I didn't appreciate seeing the amazing Scarlet/Epic brochure a couple of years ago with none of the cams to come to a fruition.

Okay... I'll check back in a couple of years. Until then I'm going with the AF100...

Steve, come back. Don't feel that way. The real action is about to happen soon. This is the front row seat (ie action, tension, drama).
