  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony A7r II - 4K internal want this!!

Still can't compare to the awesome things the A7S can do in low light.. plus the rolling shutter is kinda bad, wonder what this 5 axis stabilization is doing..

5 axis stabilization is designed for stills primarily which leads to jerky movement with continuous video feed when electronics has to make a pre-programmed decision and rolling shutter is bad if you plan on faster panning with telephoto lens as the 76 sec video with 21 sec of advertising does.

Practically as same as a7S without mention S35 1080p mode equals FF 4K in the most recent a7RII... as far as rolling shutter concerns.

Playing with RX10Mk2...great little camera.

The rolling shutter readout in full-frame mode looks superb from those quick Newshooter tests, certainly better than any DSLR I've ever seen.

What is the dynamic range of Sony A7rii? What is Sony telling?

For the Sony A7s I heard everything from 15.3 stops of dynamic range down to 11.8.

Today I read a that there’s about 12.3 stops of dynamic range on the Sony A7RII and the A7S does about 11.8 in 4K (with an external recorder).

But the same site measured sony a7s to 14.1 stops usable dynamic range of the A7S (earlier) and writes its comes surprisingly close to the Arri Amira with its legendary Alexa sensor.
Check this graph for the sony A7s.

What is the most reliable site for dynamic range? is it DXO mark that I should be looking at? http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Sony/A7R-II
Of course it is most interesting to look at real images instead of test images but Its interesting to se it in comparison to other cameras.

Yeah, thought the same when i saw this. Something is a bit messy here with the numbers. I guess there are different values for raw-stills, internal video and external video and those get mixed up.

According to Cinema5D, the DR is about 12.3 stops. They measured 11.8 stops on the A7s, and 12.4 stops on the FS7.
So sounds pretty good.

I have an A7s and received the A7R ii few days ago. Not had a lot of time to fully test it yet, but so far been very, very impressed with it. Slog at 800 ISO is more useful to me than A7s at 3600.

Sounds encouraging. Let us know what you think after you have had an opportunity to play with it.

He means that the native iso rated at 800 is much more convenient than 3200 (A7s), which requires the use of heavy NDs unless it's night :)

I see...

Yeah, that's a tough one; I mean ND is cheaper/easier than more/stronger lights... It'd be sweet to only have to worry about shaping/creative lighting, rather than having a decent amount of ambient to get proper exposure. Actually, does anyone know why s-log needs to be locked to a "base" ISO? Would DR go to crap if you were able to lower the A7s to ISO400 or something?

You gave yourself the answer. ;) There is just so much place in the sensors DR where a S-Log-profile fits in.

What about the low light? Can you show us some examples?? Please!!!
