  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony A7r II - 4K internal want this!!

i have used my sony a7r along side my nikon d810- the same image (as i sometimes cover the same shot with different captures) and i cannot for the life of me see a difference in the files- maybe only with a slim starting colour balance. the files grade heavily as well as each other, even at high issues (better than the canon in some ways).
this series of shots where shot with both (except park and hotel- which was only shot with the d810)-

all the shots where heavily graded and studied with a fine tooth comb.

so, im not quite sure what the "compression" problem is. reminds me of the worries of people over the 8 bit files of the c300.

The problem is that in high contrast areas, it MAY be a problem. I too have the 810 and the A7R. I love the A7r but if I ma being paid to shoot something critical, I don't want the camera to determine the compression level.

i am sure it would be better not to have any compression, but I do find these details quite often get exaggerated. i really don't like using the a7r, but its only high mp camera i can use my canon lenses on (like the 85mm f1.2) so i tolerate it. the files are way better than the canon both in sharpness and latitude, its just an awkward designed camera to use. i pick up my canon 5dsr on monday, so i will have a camera to compared.

i would take tests like on fred miranda with a pinch of salt. have you seen the example pics that most of these guys post?

but the reason why i will get a a7r mk2 if it lives up to its promises is that its the first full frame 4k camera that also has a decent stills size image that can also take decent lenses. it looks like a lot of camera for you money. almost a no brainer to purchase.

trying to find any info on an A7S II, I have a few of the original a7s, and they are worthy little low-light beasts and pretty widely adopted in the video world. I wonder if sony is trying to make the a7r II the spiritual successor to the a7s for those of us that use them primarily for video of if an a7s II is coming that will have specs even better tailored to vid shooters....

the video looks shitty.. way to crisp.. great for discovery channel or computer wallpapers but story telling? I am removed.. too much gloss and imperfections to the image
Because these are video cameras and footage looks like a video.Just look at the 00:15 mountains highlights are rubbish. Its nowhere near Alexa and Red.
Btw %100 im buying this

They perhaps aimed at the consumer market wich loves those kind of wallpaper images. I'll wait to have one in hand to see how it looks. The A7s is allready a real beast (even if I love shooting Dragon). I'm happy there is more choice out there. This should stay a RU discussion as I think it will have an influence on RED's evolution. Either they will have to find other market (no more Indie) and/or develop other tech.

The camera looks great but it has a Sony mount.

It's E-mount which is most flexible due to short flange distance. A7RII can not only use Canon lenses but even very fast AF PDAF works with Meatabones adapter, according to DPreview

Yeah, without knowing how it was shot, it's hard to say based off of a consumer-aimed product video promoting Sony's consumer glass. Shoot in S-Log, adjust the contrast accordingly, use some CS, BPM, or HBMs, add a touch of grain in post, and I bet it'd look 10x better/more filmic. I mean the shoot at 1min (stoking the fire) looked pretty great, which means all the shots the camera makes can look that good if care is taken.

Still kinda keen for an A7sII though; my only hesitation with it was no internal 4k (even compared to rolling shutter, which I was under the impression was massively reduced in s35 mode on the A7s).

It's impossible to clip the highlights of an outdoor frame if you have 17stop of dynamic range or your exposure decision is really really off...
They shot it at 100 asa wich tells me it's not LogS (if the log-s is done like on the 7s) as it should be written 3200 asa.

I would probably hire an(other) dp for those demos videos! ;-)

Everyone is over-thinking all of this a bit I think.

I'm just excited that this camera seems to be everything I wanted in a carry everywhere camera so I don't have to carry 2 cameras all the time - a 5D3 or D800 stills and a GH4 for video. Obviously this is not a replacement for a proper cinema camera. It is great however that you get FF, high detail stills, a mount which is adaptable to all types of lenses, 4K video internal when you need to grab more than a still, light, small, EVF all in one package. This is everything I wished Canon would have come out with ages ago. 1Dc seems cool but hell if I am going to carry around a Zacuto loop all the time. (did that with my 5D and quickly gave up on considering it at all for video).

It looks like a camera manufacturer actually threw everything in at once into a new product (stills camera manufacturer). And that is what I like.

rx100 IV, damn $1000 bucks, 4k, 960fps at 1080, slog2. Might be a fun camera to carry around, and who knows, a few slow mow things here and there doesn't sound like it would suck.

It truly has gotten to a place where just shoot good stories. Just about any camera you can buy now will net you a useable image ( given you know how to shoot at all ).

As much as this is true, most here will choose a RED or Alexa set up given the choice.
So although I agree, I really need to see something "big" shot with the A7rII (or the new kid in town NX1).
But as an EDC multi-purpose camera, as Samir put it, Sony set the bar higher again...

I agree with you about higher end cams. And to be honest I will almost always choose red on a high end job. That being said our company just got a couple Nx1s and Nx500s and they are quite stunning in quality. Even at 1080 their slomo is better than a lot of cameras out there noise and detail wise. At 4k they are nearly noiseless at 800. Really fun cameras to shoot with and they grade pretty well. Def not cinematic right out of the camera though. Needs some color love. I've sold my red though and hedged my bets on the ursa mini for the majority of my work and rent Red or Arri when client would prefer

You'r probably right. But for me the point of the RED trip was daring a new way of doing things. Shooting RAW when the industry was stuck with heavy 2k Cineon scans from 35mm. Now if Sony's codec holds it's promesses (like the A7s codec) and the QuadHD is a nice one I don't see why not shooting DSLR. I agree that it doesn't look professional, a big Alexa is nicer, but at the end it's what you can do with it wich counts for me.

I love this tagline : ONLY THE BRAVE. Wich could have been REDUSER's for many years.

Patrick, if it had 17 stops of DR that would write in big letters on the main product page and be clearly stated in product's PR.

:)

240 at roughly 1080, higher speed gets lower resolution readout.

Are the slo-mo modes full gate downscale or cropped?

Also, yeah, I'd think if it was 17stops of DR, they'd be singing that from the mountain tops.
