  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony A7r II - 4K internal want this!!

So looking forward to popping Leica Rs on this. Right now they're on my Epic M Dragon & A7r for stills.

4.5 stops in-camera image stabilization and significant improvements at low ISO will be amazing for hand-held/low-light.

If the 4k video can hold-up as a B-cam to Dragon in some cases, wow...

The chip is BSI as well. In theory, that should improve performance with wide Leica M lenses as well (and the wider Cooke Speed Panchros and the like). It should have much less color-shifting.

Not really video related, but there seems to be some concern about Sony's use use of lossy compression for its RAW files and the potential for artifacts. See: https://www.change.org/p/kazuo-hira...n-the-a7-cameras-and-future-f-e-mount-cameras

If you read some of the comments in the Imaging Resource post from the press roll-out, that issue was mentioned to Sony. They are aware of it, and it "might" be addressed down the road in a firmware update.

The A7rII is listed as 14 bit RAW, is that what the A7r claims?:

Unless they are very specific we should not trust that a "14bit" output is unadulterated or subject to a in-camera bottle neck that drops the rate down to 12bit or less before being ramped back up to 14 at the output.

They could be reffering to 14bit output at the AD.

But a promising looking camera non the less:)

Since we are here on Reduser, would be great if one of our Red Gurus, for the sake of science, shime in and give us their opinion on this seemingly new step on sensor development, and probably say if this is viable for future red sensors, and why! Would love to hear that! :)

Yeah the lossy 11-bit compression on my A7R is my really only disappointment with it.

i have used my sony a7r along side my nikon d810- the same image (as i sometimes cover the same shot with different captures) and i cannot for the life of me see a difference in the files- maybe only with a slim starting colour balance. the files grade heavily as well as each other, even at high issues (better than the canon in some ways).
this series of shots where shot with both (except park and hotel- which was only shot with the d810)-

all the shots where heavily graded and studied with a fine tooth comb.

so, im not quite sure what the "compression" problem is. reminds me of the worries of people over the 8 bit files of the c300.

Sony is claiming that the high speed readout will greatly reduce the rolling shutter compared to the previous model. If this pans out in real world testing then these little cameras will become powerful tools. The amazing performance of these cheap cameras puts pressure on Red to continues to push the envelope as the Full frame Red is 20X more expensive tham the SonyA7r2. Nobody would suggest the little Sony is a better camera but you get a tremendous bang for your buck.

Pressure all around. I've already been on a series of shoots that switched to a7s's from C300's. I was hesitant but it looks great for web content.

It's definitely not any worse than 4:1 compression on Red cameras

I guess what Dunkan meant here is the fact some compression can be perfectly acceptable and far away to be a real issue, for real shooters. Instead, they will always be an oddity or an excuse to sit geeks around the world behind their displays for sure, I bet.

Every post of yours is criticism about RED? Go somewhere else for trolling

I think he just relates it back to "RED terms" which aren't always the roses that 99% of REDusers seem to automatically think. Trolling is one thing, but it's not an entirely wrong comparison (at least in this case; not sure about the other posts you're referring to).

As for the A7rII; what was the A7r's clean ISO range compared to the A7s's? Also are they both like 14stops (I'm a little skeptical of the EV-2 - EV19 term, as I'm not sure how that relates to *useable* DR). Certainly, if you're getting 4k/~17stop (as some suggested) internal video with 10bit 422 via external recorder, that's... kind of crazy. I've been getting back into light-and-tight shooting more and more lately so I was looking at getting an FF35 camera (as a back-up/2nd cam and to take pimp stills). I was waiting to see what the 5Dmark4k was going to be, but something tells me it'll pale in comparison to the A7r2 (at least on paper) for a similar price.

-Are you referring to stills or motion ?
