  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sonnet intros RED Mini-Mag Pro Card Reader with Thunderbolt 3

finally.

G-Tech has been promising a TB3 version of their 2-bay ev dock for many a NAB but has nothing to show for it.

This is showing as in stock on Sonnet website. Just ordered a couple.

Was going to post this. Thanks

This look like a really great option, talked to the guys at NAB when they introduced the first prototype for the CF reader.

Only issue I have with it is that it can ONLY be used with an AC power input, unlike the RED MiniReader which is USB-C Self-powered.

Of course there are several Battery to AC power solution as well as Power-banks this days so it just means carrying an extra case for one of those.

Atech has had their Blackjet Cinema Thunderbolt 3 Dock with dual Red mini-mag readers for a while now. I have two of them. They work great! I don’t know how they compare in speed. But you can configure them with different styles like one red card reader, one c fast, etc. great products. Red Approved.

If anyone is having trouble with theirs, the very first batch of Sonnet readers had an issue that would not alllow them to work with 1 TB mags. They have a replacement program going on. So contact support if you are having issues.

I wonder if they are really faster then the RED reader. I thought the limit would be the read speed of the RED MAGs

They are faster than the OG USB3 readers but not appreciably faster than the current USB-C ones from Red.

However what they do allow is to download multiple cards at once at full speed, daisy chain of TB3 devices, etc.

I can download 4 cards at once, full speed, by daisy chaining 2 sonnet readers.

They were never advertised as being faster than the red mini-mag reader with USB-C for a single mag. They are still limited by the speed of the mag but they can read two at once and TB3 has more than enough bandwidth to handle those full read speeds from multiple mags. You are only going to save time if you are actually ingesting from multiple mags at once.

...and have the disk write bandwidth to accept such a data stream.

Yep definitely. I am curious what you are ingesting to on your setup with dual Sonnet readers. Are you ingesting on the go or is this more for your at studio setup?

Studio setup. I do a lot of multi cam in studio. Use the Red USB-C ones on the go.
