  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sometimes I just want to kick people in the teeth.

Too early for B16 on comercial use?
We begin in three weeks a full night production, this days is the time to decide if update or not...
3.1.8? 2.2.5? Bufff! Really I don´t know what to do.
more exposition or more noise?, safer way with lower quality or...?
may be I throw a coin and close my eyes.;-)

I think thats 90% of the issues Ive found so far on the sets Ive worked on. Ive been working with the Red since #30, and seen lots of things going round. Even on the show Im shooting now, the scripty complained about how much more work the red was for her - yet when I pressed her for info, she admitted she had read it on some forum, she had not actually worked on a red show yet. Day 5 on the show she admitted it really wasnt that hard to write the clip numbers down.

Time will make 90% of these issues go away. The other 10% is up to Jim.

It's really bizarre. With a few exceptions, the beginning of every shoot I've been on, camera prep or even wrap party, there's always a RED debate. It just gets old, so fast, I hardly partake in it anymore. It's usually a few crew members who were on a shoot where the camera went wrong, or who have heard about those shoots. With a little questioning, it's usually an operator error or not having anyone familiar with the camera on those sets.

I've learned to let the camera defend itself. Usually eyes are glued to the monitors and the keys are generally happy with the image.

I will say that the camera's reputation has gotten better in the past few months, but there's still drastic room for improvement. I'll be happy when I can prep the camera on set without one disgruntled crew member interrupting me and trying to pick a fight.

Here is South Africa, which has two real centres of production, Johannesburg and Cape Town (and to a lesser extent Durban... no offence if anyone from Durb's reads this... at least the water is warm and the surf is good), I have had mostly positive response to the Red One. I consider the industry here to be somewhat backwards in it's attitudes and quite stuck in its ways, very film oriented on the upper end and tape based HD (and SD... lots of BetaSP work still) on the lower end. I am happy to say that the Red One has enjoyed a warm welcome to Africa so far, the first feature to be shot on Red in Kenya wrapped a couple weeks ago, and I will be supplying my Red and DIT'ing on a feature in S.A. for the producers of academy award winning film 'Tsotsi' in September. So far so good, but Red has only really been in the minds of producers here as a practical shooting format for about a month or two.

It is the responsibility of the few S.A. Red owners to be up to date with everything going on here at Reduser in order to give producers and the industry at large the facts and the current state of what is and isn't possible. They don't know any better for the most part, so it's a real Red community effort to keep up the rep of the Red One while there are still a few teething problems. I do believe in time, the camera will be rock solid and will speak entirely for itself.
