  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

I truly hope that Canon, Arri, Sony and Panavision don't buy into the reds complicated workflow...I choose the Arri Alexa and ProRes over all other work flows all day!

Do you choose to shoot JPEG instead of RAW on your DSLR still camera?

Thank you for saying this Tom. I can't imagine anyone who has worked with RAW would choose a lesser format.

I've done more ENG style shooting than I care to remember, so I can say I totally understand being pressured with a quick turn around after a shoot, but when it comes to getting the best of either your photographs or motion pictures RAW is the way to go.

ProRes is pretty good but if I were producing and/or paying for a project, whatever it is, I be freakin' pissed as hell if I found out that I wasn't getting the best quality available, especially when it's so easy to get it.

I really have to question if anyone who thinks REDcode RAW is that complicated has done any significant work with the format.

What does, the fact that the breadbox was a utility device or that someone had to design the hairdryer on a CAD?

This:

The fact that they were working on it at all is what's scary because it shows how out of touch they are with what customers want.

drawing any conclusions from a concept camera is a stretch, but suggesting that they are out of touch, based on it is B.S.

There are tens of thousands of regular midlevel video camera customers that could afford to buy red1s but for a variety of reasons didn't or bought something else. About 6000 did (me included) that's hardly an overwhelming mandate indicating that's what customers want. A great many of the others bought Canon vDSLRs because they were a comfortable purchase - very little economic downside at the $800, $1700, and $2400 price points; great still cameras, and decent video with resolution at or greater than most really needed - i.e. a no-brainer. Canon's profits are up quite a bit even in this down economy, largely due to the success of their vDSLRs.

You may have to define what you mean by "what customers want". I'm pretty sure 90%+ of drivers would prefer to drive a $90K BMW750 than whatever they drive now and probably 40%+ could manage the payments. But it would require sacrifice elsewhere, or maybe they need a truck, or want a more fuel efficient car or whatever. So it isn't purely "want" that drives marketing. (Personally, I still "want" the flying cars we were promised back in the 60s :-) )

I think Canon realizes that there isn't a huge need for an extreme high resolution/high bitrate camcorder YET so they have time to develop one in an orderly fashion - and in the meantime sell truckloads of vDSLRs, but I'd bet dollars to donuts it will come.

In the meantime, that leaves room for new players. Thus Red has established a nice niche, and a foothold. I'm confident that the Epic line as put forth is a viable business over the next couple of years. Whether they can or should be a substantial player in the lower price/high volume market remains to be seen - and it will be interesting.

LOL...Hollywood is moving to LOG C and ProRes as fast as the cameras can be made!

Uh, huh. . .

How did this conversation transition into discussion of Canon's concept camera? Let's see some SSDs folks!

With speeds allowing 120fps to be recorded reliably I wonder if it could be possible for two streams of lower framerates to be recorded simultaneously, the RAW and an other such as ProRes both in the same media.

It isn't a complicated workflow, but a no-compromise workflow. Just like chemical processes done to film negatives, only now you get to do as many as you want without degradation.

Let's ship some Epics so I have something better to talk about :-)

On another matter, who cares what the Canon 4K prototype is housed in?? It's just a prototype. It could be housed in an old refrigerator for all I care. What's important is that Canon has recognized and is taking steps toward 4K. I applaud that.
I don't shoot with a dslr...but they are taking a lot of work from red owners here in new york city...

You don't shoot stills? Are you familiar with the differences between RAW and JPEG on a stills camera?

I don't shoot dslr video...I have a canon 20D...and most of the time I shoot jpeg not raw.

I don't shoot DSLR video either. But I'm surprised that you would shoot JPEG! I would say that 99% of photographers that I know or know of shoot RAW. To each his own.

Every time I see the masthead for this thread I think they've finally announced the new Epic choice, which Jim said they'd post in "a few days." I tried holding my breath but it didn't work out.

Did any SSD Modules allready ship ??

Yeah that's the real question. Amazing to have SSD but in reality when will they be available in any real amount ? It'd be nice to know if you place an order you'd receive the SSD with in a couple weeks or a month... but I get the feeling drives are so backlogged that I won't be seeing an SSD for months on end.

Brent said in another thread that backorders for Red Drives and Red Ram would get first priority. Then he said that there would be a limit of 5 SSDs per customer until the pipeline gets steady, so that sounds like there should be ample media for the only ones who can actually use the 1.8" SSDs... that is, the R-1 owners with a side module.

If the bomb evf is any indication, i'd guess available in quantity january....2012 :Angel_anim:
