  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

I think my biggest problem is the proprietary system. I have no problem with RED making SSDs available. I actually think it's quite a wonderful solution but I don't like the fact that it has to be RED SSDs only.

So many companies make you buy their products at their premium. I understand this from a financial standpoint but as a consumer it's really frustrating especially when the company stops making the device that works with their product but no one can come in and fill this gap.

Maybe RED SSDs are superior because RED just knows exactly what they are doing but is there really no hope for third party SSDs as well? RED makes really nice lenses but it'd be pretty frustrating if that was the ONLY option for their cameras.

It also means that as technology improves and SSD prices drop, RED will have no incentive to lower their prices other than out of the kindness of their hearts. I like to believe the best about RED so maybe that will be the case.

I think options and competition are healthy for a marketplace that is beneficial to both companies and their customers. Hopefully I'm completely wrong and we'll see other SSD options as time goes by but for now I'm a bit disheartened.
While I don't see RED as strictly Egalitarian, I do see the theme to be "if it's better, do it!" And by and large they leave legacy systems in place for those who prefer the status quo.

I also think their big picture vision is of a complete turn-key system for whatever shooters want or need. If I'm right, then allowing things like third party SSDs into their system, with RED's blessing, is putting their reputation on the line. Because if a third party vendor's product fails, then RED is unfairly held responsible for that failure. But, if a third party vendor makes a work-a-round and a customer uses it on the RED, the customer knows he did so without RED's o.k. and knows that he (or she) cannot ask RED to address the issue if there is a failure.

I'm sure there will be something on the aftermarket that may or may not work as a cheaper alternative. But if something goes wrong from using that product, RED would be fully justified in charging dearly for getting the products that are their responsibility working properly again.

Those who think RED is a gouging company are IMO just used to the old ways companies do business.

This is not just about one product... this is about a complete system... again, IMO.

Sorry if this has been asked... I looked through this thread but could not find the answer.
For those of us in the rental business, if we get the module for the Red One, can we swap back and forth between CF card and SSD modules for different clients with different budgets?
I remember the 16 gig upgrade was a simple install. Four screws on the side cover and a computer connector underneath.
Being able to go back and forth would certainly be flexible in a rental environment.
Cheers,
Harry

Jarred said it is user swappable just like the CF module.

Great. Flexible onboard recording solutions! Love it...

It's just like the CF reader upgrade/replacement.

Four screws, pull two connectors, swap module, plug two connectors, screw back in.

Game. Set. Match.

RED One MX is going to have a LONG life.

Just a thought:

RED is now planning to have a side module that uses 1.8" SSDs and still plans to have a rear module that uses 2.5" SSDs. That's 2 different sizes of SSD media (duh). I thought I saw an earlier post asking if both side and rear could be used at the same time. And if I only imagined the post, someone will probably ask, and others will probably think of many reasons why that might be desirable. So in order to allow interchangeability of media, wouldn't it be nice if RED made an adapter that would allow their 1.8" cards to be used in the 2.5" module? And maybe the same or another adapter could allow use of off-the-shelf 1.8" drives in the 2.5" SSD. (From an earlier post by Jarred it sounded like the 1.8" drives have a custom enclosure, and RED seems to be trying to keep an extra slim form factor for the side module, so an adapter to use off-the-shelf 1.8" drives in the side module might not be possible).

Personally, I'm not interested in the side module since Epic and even Scarlet S35 are way out of my league. Just trying to figure out how I can get an SSD module for my Fixed and save some coin on media.

Or maybe RED just plans to make everything 1.8". Street price per GB doesn't seem that different, though that may not be true at the highest performance levels and capacities.

There has never been a 2.5" SSD module....

But there is still a 2.5" Red Station MAG correct? For offloading?

I think people are confusing the MODULE with the MAG here.

Yeah, there is just the 2.5" RED Station module. It accepts standard, off the shelf, 2.5" HDDs or SSDs. As they're insanely convenient for media to offload to. Just be sure you have a good way to store and transport them.

correct.

Oh. Nevermind. (In my best Emily Litella - google that, youngsters).

But I'm sure I'm not the only person who doesn't live on these forums who gets confused about all the options.

But there IS a rear SSD recording module, right? The one that has the media slot on the right? And it uses RED-spec 1.8" SSDs. Right? And it costs $1500?

Correct and confirmed by Jarred. If you are short on time, a nice short cut is to click on Jarred or Jim or Deanan or whomever and look at their last posts...

he answered this a couple pages back with a YES.

OK this is statring to make sense, Jarred. The way I read it is that the increase in speed and price may not be such a bad thing.

Let me clarify:

The preferred media will be 1.8" SSDs, which are more expensive per Gb than Red Raid.
But, RedStation allows for very quick off-load, so 2 or 3 smaller modules can be rotated more efficiently. Is this the idea?

Two questions (which may have been answered before):

Can 1.8" SSD media be offloaded to 2.5" HDDs using Red Station without a 'puter?
Can 1.8" SSD media be offloaded to USB external HDDs without a 'puter?

Either way, I love the option of side SSD module. It will make the rig more streamlined and smaller.

Hey Jarred

...only question I have is what's the plan for delivery?

Will availability follow serial #s, or will this stuff just show up in the store one day?
