  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

Yeah, $3900 is what'll take to get my Red using these. And then I've just made my 4x 16gb cards unusable. Great. I really want to love SSD, I do. Just having to spend $3900 to make all my current media worthless on my Red is kinda sucky. Though, I wonder just how user swappable the SSD vs CF is.

Now this may be too late. But what I was really hoping for, was something in the form factor of the RedDrive that was a bay that took SSD. Best of both worlds. Was that considered? The drive port should be plenty fast enough, should be a matter of proper pin wiring and such.
I think you have to pick your poison here. CF, although amazing for what RED was able to squeeze out of it has been a bit of a hindrance. Capacity was just never there. And limitations, especially with 8GB cards. Although there is a hit to move up to SSD, I think in the end, it's the right move for RED. I'm glad it is a module that becomes part of the camera. I can't hang any more stuff off the R1. It's too much. I like the idea of streamlining it. 256GB of storage with minimal impact on camera form factor, that's a good thing. It does mean saying goodbye to CF for the most part. Like swapping lens mounts, you're not going to want to do it too often I would think.

I hear you. Dont get me wrong, I'm TOTALLY excited by the tech of all of this. I fucking LOVE the idea of recording 64gb to a single card in one go. I just wish this media upgrade wasnt going to cost as much as the MX upgrade (well, if I get 3x cards that is). I notice that all of my questions/comments have been ignored, so I dont think comments that invite product changing suggestions are desired. Which is fine, I guess new product posts sorta get me back in the 'suggestion giving' mindset that Jim thanked me for back in 08/09, but I dont think that's really wanted anymore. Or maybe it is, I dont know. I'm tired. Jarred, I hope my tone hasnt offended you, new tech always gets me going and I love you guys. cheers.

Yeah totally agree, I think 2x of the 64gb is the barebones config, always gotta have redundancy in the field. 3x would be best. In fact, I wonder if Red would do a 3x bundle right off the bat.

64gb at best data rates on the Red1 should be what, about half an hour of shooting time?

Yes, it's 30m BetaSP territory. I can deal with that. a 3x bundle would be nice. I'd go for that.

Well said. All true!

Sorry Shawn... I missed your questions?

I'm sure it's all good Shawn. Got to ask the questions when you're running a business. Can't buy blindly. I respect that. In RED's defense, I'm sure they are at the point where they need to get stuff out the door. It won't meet everyone's needs, but got to get moving on shipping cameras and accessories.

Sorry Shawn... I missed your questions?

okay cool, i just wanted to make sure I wasnt rubbing you the wrong way. because I am very excited to see Red head the solid state direction!

I'll rephrase and summarize.

1. In light of Red ending CF development past 16gb, it doesnt seem to make any sense with Epic every shipping with any form of CF module, let alone CF as the default option. Is this still under consideration? Why would a majority of people want to use 16gb cards on Epic, when they cant even use a lot of high datarates from Epic on them?

2. Just how 'user swappable' is the Red1 SSD module? Is this a 10 second 1st AC swap, or more like a 10 min clean environment careful swap?

3. Could you guys do a 'startup bundle' of like: Red One SSD module, 2x (or 3x) 64gb, Red SSD reader and base station?

Jarred, thanks for giving us the scoop on this tonight. It really does help with planning purchases over the next few months. Got all of the information I needed in terms of media options. Good stuff!

ditto!

Thanks Jarred for foregoing sleep to let us in on the workshop!

And for those who don't have to worry about money:
RED Station 1/8" - $250
1.8" SSD Side Module - $1500
(4) 256GB 1.8" REDMAG - $12,800 (3 mag changes, keep media on drives until next day)
Total - $14,550

Well, you might add another RED station, need a spare one... this isn´t going to be cheap, but hopefully no more recording errors ever again. And 5k @ 120fps on Epic - is a beauty! With SSD slot on the Epic brain we can scrap a recording module, and save a bit there both weight and money.

We could always hope for a package deal, buy 3 x 256Gb cards get the fourth for free ;-)

Now bring on EPIC!!!!

Great stuff! So how much weight does the module add compared to the CF-version? And what form factor are the drives? 5mm? 8mm? And I assume they're somthing like 50 grams (drives)? Not that this really matters, but hey, I'm curious :)

Or the Scarlet ;)

Can the Fixed lens scarlet support this side module? It looks to be about as long as an Epic and can support the length of the 1.8" SSD from what I can tell.

If not, is the 1.8" back module still in the pipeline so that we may add SSD to Scarlet?

KO

8.5mm Cards. The difference in weight between the two modules is negligible.
