I'm evaluating the possibility of buying 2 (maybe three) RedOne cameras, and I'm evaluating the possibile configurations to start with.

I've some questions about some Red Accesories:

- I've read the Red Drive is ok, but can have problems when recording in not steady situations (because of the moving parts of the hard disks), and it's also pretty noisy, so the Flash Drive seems a better alternative (with much more space than flash cards) for certain situations. Does it have any side effects?

- What's the typical shoot time of a Red Brick battery, in a situation with Red One + EVF + LCD + Red Drive Raid?

- What's the charge time for a Red Brick Battery?

- Are the Red Charger and the Red Power Adaptor compatible with both 120V@60Hz and 240V#50Hz standards (so that I can use the same adaptor/charger in USA and Europe)?

- Red Drive and Red Flash Drive are connected using a eSATA cable, right? Does it have other connection options (for example, FireWire400/800), for connecting it to a computer?

- What is the Red Focus Hook Set useful for?

- Can I find, online, videos about mounting/preparing the Red Camera for shooting?

Thanx

- The RED flash drive is not available yet.

- I don't know the battery time with the EVF because the EVF has just begun shipping, or is about to began shipping.

my red drive is not noisy IMO you heard WRONG -
no problem hand holding , dolly moves , i've hand held in auto's ...so far no dropped frames ... CF cards downside is 4 1/2 min recording time

- What's the typical shoot time of a Red Brick battery, in a situation with Red One + EVF + LCD + Red Drive Raid?

i don't keep track ... CF card 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hrs depending on how much in standby & recording ... 3hrs if just in standby ... note: i do not have EFV ..

- What's the charge time for a Red Brick Battery?

i have 4 batts - have never used all 4 in a day yet ... guessing 8 hrs on full charge

- Are the Red Charger and the Red Power Adaptor compatible with both 120V@60Hz and 240V#50Hz standards (so that I can use the same adaptor/charger in USA and Europe)?

both are 100-240v

yes - 800/400 and USB2 for computer connections

- What is the Red Focus Hook Set useful for?

if you use tape measure for focus

- Can I find, online, videos about mounting/preparing the Red Camera for shooting?

??????????????? i haven't seen one ..

Thanx[/QUOTE]

Hey Marco (parli italiano?),

believe me, it's really a straightforward and simple job.

Once you have all that stuff in your hand, the only thing that you need is just a minute of concentration, and a deep breath.

After that, you can build a premium production package, battery, plate, monitor, evf, in a snap (one-two hours...).

Just my two cents.

Elcurado is right. It took longer to lay out all the little pieces of gear than it did to actually assemble the thing. Pretty intuitive, even if your knowledge base is minimal.

Unfortuantely, RED never shipped my 19mm Arri base plate (kind of important piece, Red Team, but guess it's back-ordered?), but luckily we had another quick release plate on hand that worked okay.

And what about battery time with Red + LCD + RedDrive?

Thanx

PS. Si, parlo italiano, ti ho anche contattato in privato. :p

Thanx everyone.

Now, my only doubts/questions are about mounting the camera on a standard tripod, and about what matte box and what follow focus to choose for starting.

Marco, you'll have to base your tripod support on how much weight you're planning to add to the camera. A lot of tripod systems will hold the camera itself, but once you start adding all of your accessories and a lens you need to make sure you've got some good support there.

As for a matte box and follow focus, can you rent? That way you can try some and find what works best for you. To get good ones you'll be dropping a lot of cash, so consider renting to start and then purchasing if and when it becomes feasible.

Scusa, non avevo collegato... Ma hai ricevuto la mia mail ieri?

Ciao,
Corrado.

Sorry to all for this Italian paragraph... Just talking about mail messages.

Right.

For instance, in this configuration:

- Red One Body
- 18-50 or 50-150 zoom or 300mm lens
- Red Production Base Pack
- Red Brick
- Red Drive
- Red LCD
- Red EVF
- Red Flash (CF) Module
+ a typical mattebox + follow focus

what would the weight be?

You're perfectly right.

I just asked becaus I'm curious of knowing what solution are being adopted on this forum (I come from HD broadcast, not 35mm, so I'm less experienced on 35mm-style gear).

Ciao,
Puoi consigliarmi qualcosa?
ciao e grazie

Interessa molto anche me...

can anyone recommend a good tripod or the one frequently used. what is the price rage and if possible link to the site?

Thanks.

Sky1walkeer,

What are you adding to the camera? If it's a long zoom, mattebox, follow focus, batteries/drives off the back, etc. then you'll have to look for a significant tripod to support it. Mitch Gross was kind enough to show me the Panther line of tripod heads and I have to say they were very nice. The 28 and 45 models could handle a Red rig nicely. But be prepared to pay. They are a fair price in terms of market value, but still more than a lot of people would be willing to spend unless they could recoup their investment.

If you are running with a relatively light rig, maybe the O'connor 1030, the Miller 55, the Sachtler 18 or 20, Panther 15.

I highly recommend trying out your Red rig on the various systems so you get a feel for it. Everyone's gear may be slightly different and everyone has different expectations when it comes to tripod heads. What one may consider smooth, another may think doesn't quite cut it. The only way you'll know what works for you given budget and expectations is to try a few of them out.
