hello
I've got some random red newbie questions (maybe stupid ones):
1/ can I put a redmag in the red station and eject it (after unmounting it in the computer of course) when the red station is ON? or do i have to switch ON after having put the redmag in and switch OFF before ejecting it?
2/ what about AC power chord? is it preferable to disconnect the power by taking off the power plug on the camera first or the wall power plug first? (i know it sounds stupid ^^ but I had cameras where these details were important)
3/ when i'm starting the camera, sometimes there is a weird image for 2 seconds at first, before it runs normally, like half white, half black, and vertical grey lines looking like glitches. is it normal?
4/ changing the lenses while the camera is running, no problem?
5/ when the camera freezes, what's the process? just holding the power button >5sec?
6/ is redmag hotswappable? can we put a redmag in a running camera?
thanx!

1. Yes
2. Seems safer to me, but I had occasions where the power cord slipped out (It's not very tight) and nothing bad happened.
3. This is normal, you'll see it when switching formats as well, the screen is syncing.
4. Of course not!
5. Mine hasn't frozen yet, but I'd think so.
6. Yes, sure, but only pull after eject is confirmed.

Thanx Uli!

so I sum up (as there is double questions at once and I'm not 100% sure it's answers to the right one):
1/ I can let the red station ON and put or unmount redmags as I like.
2/ There, it's not clear for me
4/ No need to switch off the camera when changing lenses.

Another question: is formatting the only way to delete shots from my ssd card?

2. It's best to unplug power from the camera first. It's just a better habit to get into.

Formatting is currently the only way to delete clips from a REDMAG SSD. It is unknown if this will change. Some feel it's safest this way. Some really want a delete clip function. An interesting mid ground would be to have a delete last clip function. I'm sure this is on the minds of the people at Red as well as this topic comes up occasionally.

Really? I would have taken it as "of course it is not a problem to change lenses without powering down". I don't see why it would be a problem. It is true that it may be slightly preferable to power the camera down only because the sensor may be slightly less prone to attracting dust when powered down but it really isnt necessary if you take normal precautions not to expose the sensor to lots of dust.

Pete, why do you say you should always turn off the camera when changing lenses?

I found some of the answers to your questions in the manual. Its worth reading, honestly.

well i searched in the manual before posting of course. i googled a lot too.
english is not my primary language. i was not sure 100% on the exact meaning of some answers. and some were not in the manual at all.
anyway it will help some other people for sure.
thanx to all for your answers.

Sam, you should always turn off the camera while changing lenses. I am sure that is what Uli meant by "Of course not!"

This is not the case at all. It's fine to leave the camera running during a lens change - no need to slow down production unnecessarily.

In three years with the Red One I never powered down the camera for a lens change. The camera would not be accepted by a professional crew if that were necessary (in particular the R1 with it's boot time).

Sorry, didn't mean for that to sound so harsh. I'm Just a fan of reading the manual first. But you are correct, not every answer is in there.

Yes I was going to say. That would be ridiculous to power the camera down every time you change lenses, not necessary at all. Never heard of such a thing.

CMOS sensors exert some sort of physical "pull" when powered. Meaning they attract dust and invisible particulates. Not sure if this is magnetic, static or what, but if you have time to power down the camera for a lens change, do it. If you don't, cover the sensor with a clean hand or cap for the 15 seconds in which it is exposed.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong?

Well, I'm not sure about that effect, the only one I can imagine is static pull, but RED would have taken care of that, I'd expect. You can't keep the space around the sensor dust-free anyway in a camera with interchangeable lenses.

but of course one should be quite careful about the environment where you change lenses. Plus, RED is giving a clear recommendation about gear for cleaning the sensor.

I didn't mean to spark such a controversy. Seems like common sense to me that you would avoid having the camera powered up without a lens on. I know with a dslr it's advised that you shut it off while changing lenses.

Looks like I made a misinformed assumption.
