  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some New software on RED website

It always crashes on me.

As soon as I click log and transfer I get a spinning beach-ball then fcp quits.

osx 10.5.2 fcp 6.0.3 quicktime 7.4.5
late 2007 macpro 8core 3.0ghz 5 gig ram

Wow, that's very cool. I'm jealous. I have two 8-core Xeon workstations with QuadroFX4500 graphics cards, 8GB RAM, and for all of it I can't take advantage of any of this because I'm stuck running Windows. It's pretty frustrating seeing the amazing workflow developing with FCP and not being able to benifit from it.

I'm considering buying a 8-Core Mac Pro just for the FCP workflow, and this little plugin is just another reason swinging me in that direction. We will be running Scratch on one of the 8-Core PC platforms for 2K uncompressed D.I. but the FCP route is looking by far the best way to perform painless, high quality offline edits in Prores for conform in Scratch, or as the final product in productions that aren't going into D.I.

I wonder how the PC's will like the addition to the family?

Anyway, this is definitely good news.

right, it crashes if i have a red cf card in the reader before i open fcp and open log and transfer.

it also crashes if once i have opend log and transfer i insert a red cf card.

i think its either 4k 2:1 or 2k 2:1 both at 24fps footage on the card.

I've been transferring off of a hard drive which I had offloaded to. Maybe it doesn't going from the CF reader? Is it FW800?

Don't use stuff directly off the card. It worked fine for me with stuff off my raid.

Are you sure your not clicking "log and capture" instead of "log and transfer"

Yes, I choosed Log and Transfer. I have a Kona 3 in my system, but I don't use it to capture.

Anytime I try to drag a clip to the 'drag media here' area always appears this message:

'Error: This operation requires a controllable deck.
If you have a controllable deck, please make sure you have selected the appropriate device control preset in Audio/Video Settings.'

... and then 'Log and Transfer' close :S

My current Audio/Video Settings are:

Sequence Preset: AJA Kona3: 1080p 25 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
Capture Preset: AJA Kona3: 1080p 25 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
Device Control Preset: Non-Controllable Device
Video Playback: AJA Kona 1080i25 10 Bit (1920x1080)
Audio Playback: AJA Kona

Just installed the transfer plugin. Couldn't figure out that you have to select a folder instead of clips. The two options are transcoding to ProRes and ProRes HQ (wish there were more options) I tried converting the files and found out it used 650% - 750% processor time on my 8 core mac (exactly the same as compressor) At regular ProRes (not HQ) it took 3:30 for a :54 clips--not bad but I think I will stick with Compressor and converting into AIC since it's realtime and I am running timelines through crimsonworkflow anyway (and will do a ProRes render then.)

This is an interesting feature. I saw it demoed in the booth on Monday morning. A few things to note (from memory of course, and also don't know of its availability right now). On import, you can choose what your look is. Not as robust as Redcine or Redalert but it does allow you to choose from some presets. But also, a functionality that I don't think is available yet (maybe it is) is that in RedAlert you can set a look, export that look, and that will be available to you in Log and Transfer. So for example, I grade a scene that looks the same. Save that one look out, and then in Log and Transfer, under the drop down menu there will be your look. The only problem I see with this right now, is from my understanding is that it applied the look to every single clip in your log and transfer bin. I haven't had time to test it out, or ask them about it, but it would be even more powerful if you could set looks per individual shots. So if I import an entire shoots worth of red footage, I can have maybe 3 - 4 looks throughout and just highlight the clips and apply certain looks that way. That would be sweet. If it does it right now, then great. If not, I hope to see that.

Stongbad_2Z, you should have a sniff around Cineform's ideas on the matter. You apply looks to the files directly in the OS (non-destructive, lotsa options) and then that gets applied in your NLE - without rendering. And then you can CC on top of that if you want - or go back to the files and change things around there (and save looks too). Sexy time. Hopefully something to look forward to.

@ Luis Ortiz

you have to update final cut on 6.0.3 to instal the plug in. to have acces of the update in "the update software" panel of OSX you have to instal QT 7.4.5

Vincent, thanks very much for your suggestions!

After having some trouble, I finally upgraded FCP to 6.0.3 and QT to 7.4.5 and I was able to install the new RED Log and Transfer Plugin.

The problem I was having was that in my applications folder, I had all my Final Cut Suite programs in a separate folder. "Software update" will not see apps unless they are sitting directly in the applications folder.

I now have my FCS2 apps scattered in the applications folder so they can be seen by "software upgrade".

Thanks again.
