  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some New software on RED website

isnt this the same as converting the proxies to ProRes via Compressor, with the disadvantage that i cant put the pro res files onto an external drive and edit where i want, and its not a full debyer?

You can put the footage wherever you want using Log and Transfer - just set your external drive as a scratch disk. Don't know about the debayer - I didn't think compressor did full debayering anyway? Certainly files generated using both methods look identical in quality on a 1080p monitor, and not far off the quality from REDCINE if you're downsizing on export.

The advantage is as follows:

1) Footage is automatically imported and organised into FCP as it ingests.
2) Footage can be logged in L&T
3) Footage can be trimmed easily (marking ins and outs) prior to ingest, speeding the process further.
4) Footage can continue to be logged and trimmed during import.
5) Footage is re-encoded faster in my limited tests.
6) Footage can have REDALERT 'looks' applied before import. VERY useful.

Disadvantages:

1) Has to be imported as ProRes (not a problem to me - but surely to some others)
2) Has to be imported half-size. So no 2K as 2K. Shame, but sure to be fixed soon.
3) Cannot be cropped or resized to make it 16:9 (as you can in compressor) and the 'look' has to be applied globally.

Speaking as a FCP editor, this method is far easier and quicker - although I admit that's in part because I am so familiar with the software.

the quality should be almost the same, compressor doesnt do a debayering.
imported half size doesnt matter, because _F.Proxies are _H Proxies scaled up....you can do it manually in fcp.

"set your external drive as scartch disk"---- i dont quite get it...my english is a little limited, sorry i am unfamiliar with the word "scratch disk"...can you break it down for me what you mean?

Importing half size matters because 2k footage imports as 1024x512, not much good for an HD online, if that's how you want to use this method.

You can set where footage is imported to in FCP - this is called the scratch disk. If you set this destination in FCP settings to your external drive, you can use log and transfer to import footage straight to this drive. Hope that makes it a little clearer.

Remember that you cant transfer 16:9 or varispeed stuff, so there is still no audio-in-camera option when shooting 16:9. It really sucks. Come on Red let us proxie 16:9 stuff.

That's definitely the biggest shortfall here - but remember this is beta 0.0.1...

RED have stated that build 16 brings so many image enhancements that new versions of the software will be released for it. Here's hoping a new quicktime codec with a 16:9 fix is included...
