  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Solution to EVF Cold problems

Hi Jay,

Having played around with the EVF in the past I noticed it's possible too remove the front section including the elements for focusing on the lcd.

Wouldn't it be possible to put a small circular heater in between these two pieces, directly infront of the lcd and heat it simply through conduction. Such a device might require very little power and could therefore draw direct from the d-tap.

This is surely a problem with the lcd only and not any other part of the evf isn't it? I dunno, certainly no expert!

Cheers
Paul

Paul,

You may be right, but I have ZERO interest of doing ANYTHING to the inside of a RED camera. This way works, and does not modify the RED in any way..

Best way to go I think.

Jay

I understand your trepidation Jay, and a 40 below or nothing scenario is not my intent. rather a what can it handle test.

Arctic X Shield Electronic EVF Heater

Arctic X Shield Electronic EVF Heater

Final Versions... Shipping in a little less than two weeks... Will start taking pre-orders in the next day or so..

It's looking pretty good.. New material and additional covering has made it more resistant to cold... Shipping soon.

Two photos of the unit, and a photo of everything included in the package...

It's come together better than we expected. Pretty Exciting.

Looks excellent Jay. just wondering what the four screws in the photo are used for?

The rail that mounts to the EVF (The one that slides into your ET EVF Mount) actually holds a lot of the pads and insulation in place. However when we used the new material, the unit became a little thicker than I had planned.. So in order to make sure it's not too hard to put the rail back on, and to make sure we don't strip out the screw holes on the EVF, I am using screws a couple millimeters longer than the stock screws that come with the EVF.

Hope this makes sense.. A video will be along in a few days.

Looks great, Jay!

If I still owned my EVF, I'd be buying one.

Almost makes me wish I could afford an EVF :)

we had a solution built by cinegate berlin made of 3 heating pads each 12V / 5W and attached with velcro to the EVF - the "unit" is powered via D-TAP.

but your unit looks much more professional jay!

best wishes,
martin

Thanks guys...

This was a rough project in more ways than I can say. I hope they sell!

I'll have more on ordering once my ducks are in a row.. Gonna make an installation video too...

Time to get back in front of the camera!

"Endurance"

"Endurance"

Here's the "Endurance" model.. This is our Sub-Zero version.

Two heaters, two battery compartments...

All-go-no-quit-big-nuts-super heater...

Any base heater (Like the one I showed you above) can be turned into an "endurance" model.

You guys have been really supportive...

Thank you!

A lot of you have been asking about the link to purchase this thing... Please bear with me as I check a few things before I start taking orders. Should not be more than a day or two..

It's performing really well.

Eagle Watching

Eagle Watching

We went to Alton yesterday to Eagle Watch.. It was 27f so I used the heater.. Truth is the thing is so light, and protects the EVF so I never take it off.. No reason too..

27 is not that cold, so I turned the battery setting to 50% in order to get it's run time to over 2.5 hours. There was tiny bit of flattening in the real light areas, but I did not care about that... It was doing what I needed.

In this photo you can see my finger under the butto flap.. I find myself not removing that flap, but just lifting the corner off it and pulling my finger underneath. Works well, and since there are a lot of "button pushers" in my family, I like keeping it covered.. They don't press what they cannot see.

And before you all jump on me, yes it's a cheap little 300mm still canon lens... I like the way it looks for this, and I LOVE that I don't have to baby it. Sometimes I just like to go out and shoot.. Ya know?

Sam,

There are a number of units out in the field now.. No problems reported, and it works better than planned.. I do not have a lot of them left, and I'm not sure I'll be making more.. If you have an EVF, I suggest you get it while you can

It works extremely well and far less power consumption than I would have imagined. It is ingenious.

Thanks Jay! Am I correct in thinking that your product will not fit the new bomb evf?
I want to be forward thinking, and I think the bomb evf is what I intend to use for cold weather work in the future.
If this is true, then would you consider modifying to fit the bomb evf? Thanks!

He he he.. I was just talking to someone about that in another thread!
Yeah.. If the bomb cannot handle cold, we'll redo it, and give consideration for those that already own an Arctic X (Gotta be cheaper anyway.. you will already own the heater elements and batteries.. We expect we'll re-use those)
Jay

However.. I sure as hell hope the Bomb does cold well.!!!
