  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Solution to EVF Cold problems

Jay, welcome to the reality of northern Alberta. -40f or Celsius (nearly equivelant) is quite common. and yes we shoot in it.

Yeah, as they say... 40 below is 40 below.

I think Jay's solution will probably work with two heaters. And to add another bit, maybe wrap it with a 3mil plastic bag or reflective mylar to trap more heat and act as a wind-break.

Jay, I think you may have found your ideal field tester. I don't mind the cold, but at -25°F/-32°C I go home. :smilielol5:

Glad I could enterain you people.. And yes, tell them they are out of their minds.

I'll try to get this thing where you need it, but no promises... As a rule I try not to work in places where my pecker might break off....

:)

hahaha I was lucky enough to be out of town for the coldest day so far this year. -47 C (about -50 f i believe) and that was before factoring in wind. boy was i glad to be out of town that day. I only had to deal with -37.

Well if you want a test we are getting close to the right time of year for it up here. generally we have a week end of january or early february that is about -40 for most of it, and judging by the forecast we are headed that direction. Ill be shooting an hour north of Edmonton in Barrhead alberta. Don't bother looking it up unless your willing to zoom in quite aways.

of course if you would like to do a bit more entertaining of a test, i would be willing to head out to the mountains for a few days in february, either before or after Red Day

And then there is DYI

And then there is DYI

Could this not work just as well? http://www.albeebaby.com/sukiwangotrb.html

And its 1/30th of the cost. 300.00 is pretty expensive for foam covered heating element, isn't it? I'm Just asking of course.

Well would love to test it out. Maybe shoot some snowmobile footage or something. If it works great it would be something I would definitely buy and recommend to the the other owners up here.

Had a friend work a 3 camera outdoor shoot where this would have possibly been nice, the red one body needed a 1 K to keep running.. he joked we had more light on the camera than on the subject. The temperature was a balmy - 47.
We would be interested to test this and future bodies.. for cold but not sure we will get another good cold snap this year.

But what is it in these EVFs that makes them act this way in cold weather ? Why can't RED make something to them to make them work properly or is this a common problem to electronic EVFs worldwide :P ? Will the new Bombs be better at this ?

The Bomb EVFs have improvements in cold weather. RED did a fantastic job on the current EVF all things considered.

This is why we've created this thing, the EVF is a good product, it just needed a little help in this area, that's all.

I'm waiting for the final pieces of this thing.. Should happen this week. Will keep you all informed

3 Different Packages

3 Different Packages

We're going to offer three different packages:

Arctic X Shield - Base Package
The Shield
Heating Element
Insulation Pad
Battery Pocket
EndCap
Focus Ring Cover
1 Lithium Ion Battery (about 90 min run time)
Single Wall Charger
$399.00

Arctic X Shield - Extended Run Package
Same as above, but we replace the battery with a lithium polymer battery (over 3 hrs 45min run time)

Super Shield (For serious -5f or more below temps)
The shield
2 heating elements
2 battery pockets
2 Lithium Poly batteries
insulation pad
End Cap
Focus Ring Cover
DUAL charger
Price on this will be around $550.00 or so.. Still locking it down.

The idea here is that I want you to be able to build out what you need for your specific requirements. You can also add stuff to your shield later on, but it's cheaper to get it all at once if you can.

I expect we'll start taking orders next week. I will get all sorts of photos and things up soon.. Waiting on final protos.

Of course we will sell batteries, chargers (As well as a car charger) and other things separately as needed.

If / When I get a chance to test this out, I will be sure to put it through its paces as it is something I am personally very hopeful about. I have tried everything from click heat pads to taping hand warmers to it. past about -10 C nothing has worked so far. at -40 the view finder becomes useless as it almost freezes up entirely... though the camera still works great. keep in mind that these temperatures are pure temp and don't factor in the wind chill. So if I do test one for Jay, be sure to look for a Full Review. I plan on pushing it...

This test sounds like a good idea, but I also don't want this to turn into a -40 or nothing tool. My own personal goal was ZERO F. I felt if I could get it to work in that temp, I could keep the EVF going through 90% of my cold weather jobs.

That said, we've changed the design a bit and created the "Super Shield" option for those people who want it to perform below zero.

I'm from MO (Heh heh.. I really am) so I have to SEE all this to say for sure... Hopefully all this will happen in the next few days.

Hi Jay,

Having played around with the EVF in the past I noticed it's possible too remove the front section including the elements for focusing on the lcd.

Wouldn't it be possible to put a small circular heater in between these two pieces, directly infront of the lcd and heat it simply through conduction. Such a device might require very little power and could therefore draw direct from the d-tap.

This is surely a problem with the lcd only and not any other part of the evf isn't it? I dunno, certainly no expert!

Cheers
Paul
