  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

solarization in the EVF

This happened to me just last night shooting a concert. My EVF has less than 15 hrs on it so I don't think it a issue of wearing out.
I also had a "Audio recording error" come up and shut down my recording. Had to reboot to get things back up and running.
The solarization went away as well.

They are probably not related but it would be nice to get to bottom of what's going on.

Thought it had been recorded that way.

Be better not to have it.

I've had this problem in both cold and normal weather conditions. One day I shot bunch of stuff thinking my EVF was behaving weird and the solarization actually was on the footage. Ruined about a half day of B roll. The cause appeared to have been a bad black shade calibration. Recalibrating fixed it.

the worst is this....
when recording 2 channels of audio.. whenever the audio peeks.. the evf flashes.. it will change luminance.. this is super week.. because i get DP's freaking out and looking to me for a solution. Has happened a few times for me

i can't recall it happening with Build 16 but it has happened with Build 17 and when i've needed to shoot anamorphic Beta Build 18. I'm hoping it's a Build issue that can maybe be fixed when release build 18 comes out.

You think the solarization is a "Build thing"?

i'm just saying that until this year it had not happened to me. A lot of problems we have faced have usually been fixed by soft ware builds but occasionally they have caused other small side effects. this problem only occasionally happens so maybe red can write some software that might fix this bug.
Build 18 currently has too many bugs to be considered for the release build.
the solarization has only happened to me on build 17 and build 18.

i get this, it's apain in the ass, but it seems to be a "Quirk", but i don't think i have evr had a camera that didn't have some kind of quirk, be it film or digital.

We tested again today and had the solarization pretty much at once in a sunny environment, at about 19 degrees Celsius. Also, the EVF suddenly changed it´s luminance when the aperture was changed !!!

Solution????

Solution????

EVF started acting quirky this weekend. Studio setting. solarization in the EVF. unplug and pluggin back in the viewfinder did a temporary fix - for about 2 hrs.
First time running on AC power.
Any solution to this other than unplugging????

I'm having the same problem on set at the moment. The thing is, I believe it's a camera body issue and not the EVF itself. This is a 2 cam shoot, we've swapped out EVF cables and the EVF itself and the issue remains. I've tried the original EVF on the other cam body and it was fine. I restored the System, Look and User settings (keeping the firmware unchanged [Build 30] I believe it resolved the issue but the camera was replaced anyways. NOW, the following day, same issue on a different body! My previous steps didn't resolve the issue, either did restoring the black shading and performing a black shading. Will wait til the morning to see if it's still occurring. Oh yeah, we're also shooting in the cold (-2C)
If anyone has more info on this, please post your findings. Thanks

LCD solarization

LCD solarization

Let me chime in here- Solarization on LCD panels usually has to do with LVDS connection- that's the cable that plugs into the LCD panel. Usually replacing the plug(unplug->plug back ) fixes the problem- I think it may be corrosion on the contacts. EVF is a kind of LCD so it could possibly suffer from this problem.
Sometimes you need to use contact cleaner and apply some dielectric grease to keep moisture out.
I'm not encouraging anybody to disassemble the EVF but the fact that this failure starts occurring now on multiple units could be an indicator of this issue...
Hit me up if it's out of warranty and I'll see what I can do..

Guys if you are shooting in the cold.. They that will cause solarization of the EVF.. Temps as low as 40 degrees F can cause it depending on which EVF you have. Some are very sensitive, and some are not..
