Occasionally the image in the EVF becomes solarized. it normally goes away after a while or with a bit of fiddling but it is the sort of thing that worries DOPs and stresses DITs. Is there any official reason why this sometimes happens.

My EVF will occasionally get wacky also, I just need to give it an unplug/replug.

(and I assume you are not accidentally bumping on/seeing "false color" mode)

no this is definitely not false colour.

I have been experiencing this as well. Sent my EVF in. They couldn't duplicate the problem - so they want me to send the whole body and EVF in. I have tried it on another body and it was fine. The last time I used it there was no problem.

Intermittent problems are a real pain because you give up your camera for a week and "hope" they can reproduce the problem???

I've regularly had this and just do the unplug/replug thing, no worries for me but someone used my kit the other day and was seriously worried by it. Thought it had been recorded that way.

Be better not to have it.

I've had this too - I guess I attribute it to real time decode issues. It seems to happen in certain lighting conditions such as outdoor direct sun. Difficult to repeat but shows itself on skin tones more easily than other spaces to me.

we have had this many time when shooting into early morning sun as strong backlit and/ or when we stopped down and silhouetted subject against morning sky. Never Showed up in R3D files after the fact

I never even worry about it as I'm used to it. I do a lot of studio shoots for commercials and get it as the day gets longer. Other people, especially those shooting Red for the first or second time seem to get a bit unsure.

We load it up and they see it's not on the rushes, but it would be better if it wasn't there in the finder either.

I get this too. Solarization in cold weather, and strange effects with strong backlight. Intermittent enough to be difficult to reproduce in troubleshooting; but happens enough to make my gear seem "dodgy" on set.

It's certainly possible to work with, but my feeling is -- it's a $3000 viewfinder, it should work properly.

solorization??? if its under warranty im sure they would.. unless its only happening every NOW and then.. which is a common cold factor. if its happening relentlessly.. it should be fixed.

It doesn't worry me as i know it doesn't show up on the footage. but when it happens it's embarrassing every one looks at you (the DIT) to fix the problem and they expect it to be done quickly.

Same situation for me.

I must say, it's not something I noticed when the EVFs were brand new, so it makes me wonder whether heating/ cooling over time causes something along the lines of a glue deterioration problem.

Can anyone else confirm that their EVF was fine soon after purchase, then later showed signs of this issue?

I've become very fond of my 7" Red LCD as a result of this issue. I find it a better picture, even if the resolution is slightly lower. (I feel that the "solarisation" perhaps takes away from resolution, definitely the subtleties in the image), and makes me worry I'm overexposing. The image has that look of overexposure. saturated but lacking detail, that you may get in a DV camera. I'm happier in general putting a hood on the 7", making it fine for day exterior shooting.

This is exactly the case for me. It worked fine for many months. It is only in the last few months I have started to see it - albeit intermttently.

I recently acquired a dual battery mount from SWIT, which means for the first time the camera is never turned off during a shoot day. Maybe it never happened before because we were rebooting throughout the day?

Has anyone sent in their EVF and had it successfully fixed?

I'm sure now they are trying to fix it.

Because of that new EFV are not shipping at all right now.

Hope they would re-call all of ours to fix it one day (!?)

Rebooting is just annoying when you are on set...
