  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Software to run your post company

Any updates in this area? Did any new solutions get released? I'd love to find a "magic bullet" that handled accounting, invoicing, production related tasks (scheduling, call sheets, budgeting, etc) and post production management. Currently, I need multiple apps to do these things.

I also have been looking for a "one stop shop" to manage our resource scheduling + staff scheduling + project management + accounting for our small post production facility (10 rooms, a few cameras, Macs, tape machines and 5 staff). The closest program we found to meeting our needs was an app called FoxOMS. http://www.foxoms.com It's biggest selling point to us was that its like shotgun in that its a hosted app which means we have none of the overhead costs of running and maintaining a server on site. Another huge plus for fox is its price. We are on the $150 a month package but i think their cheapest is something like 25 bucks a month. We looked into studio suite and farmers wife (scheduall was always out of the question) but they just seemed overly complex and slow plus staff training was a bit of a nightmare.

Unfortunately FoxOMS doesn't cover all of our needs (mainly invoicing) but they assure me its coming so in the mean time its still QuickBooks for accounting. Oh joy

Anyway just my humble opinion but havent seen it posted in this thread so thought i would mention it incase it helps someone else.

Studio Suite does basically everything you are looking for. We've been running it for about a year and a half now and I certainly do not love it but it gets the job done. It took us a very long time to get it all set up and customized. It's a major pain. FoxOMS looks nice, hadn't heard of it before. We've been talking to the guys that make Studiometry http://www.oranged.net/studiometry/ which is really great but missing some key features for post production and resource management. The next version will supposedly focus on filling these holes but it's probably 8 months off.

There is no magic bullet out there right now. Good luck.

Any updates on this subject since NAB 2013? FoxOMS, StudioSuite, Shotgun, etc? What's are peoples suggested company these days?

Me promoting my own product probably does not come across as so very convincing.

But I been using Farmers wife and file maker pro in the past 16 years so thats my references, and where I come from. But then I invested quite few years on our best programer to make what the others programs could not give.

This has not been available until just recently: http://wordpress.syndicate.se/syndicate-projectmanger/

If you run a small operation 15 employes or less and want to stream line your quotes, schedule and invoicing and be able to focus on the actuall work but still have a total control over cash-flow, incoming jobs payments etc. Then what we sell beats the others, hands down, there is no comparison.

We're still using Shotgun. Tank, Shotgun's asset management system is far too complicated for a small shop but they are about to start a big push to streamline all of their products and simplify everything so that it's less intimidating and more artist friendly. It's really more of a shot tracking system though still. They have Revolver now too which is a review and annotation system for dailies etc. If you want to schedule rentals and handle your invoicing though Shotgun really isn't the right tool for the job. I wouldn't say it's really a competitor to StudioSuite etc since it's focused largely completely different things: Tasks, shot progress, review and collaboration.

Agree, Shotgun is probably a quite good thing to have if you pitching for doing the EFX work of Avatar IV or such. But if you look at whats going on those kind of places are falling like bricks at the moment. I also think that when these "producer" / accountant kind of applications starts to be involved in the actual data managment, file storing etc. Then something is wrong, let producers do what they do and the artists / data managers do what they do and try not to bundle it all in one software.

So if you think what I say above make somewhat sence look at: http://wordpress.syndicate.se/syndicate-projectmanger/

Im not an accountant or producer myself, but the way I fly I very often have to put on those hats aswell, making a quote a professional and detailed and updatable quote for a client should not take more than a few minutes, no matter where you are or what computer you are on... Our system is totally web based and acessable by any browser, no install needed.

Also we got a web based invoice system that updates the quotes until payday and then flip the quote into a invoice and emails it to the client...

Hereis a link to such quote just to show, it took an idiot like me about 2 minutes to make. http://syndicate.se/project/Invoice.aspx?id=34f561aaf7fd
