As I was browsing through the red.com store today I noticed that 'Software' is now there as a selection. Theres nothing in there, but does this mean that RED has, or at some point will, have software for sale?
(slight panic that the new GPU RedCine X will be a paid-for piece of software)

The RREncode Plugin lives there, which encodes the .R3D files used to playback on REDRAY and other supported devices coming in the future.

I would describe it as a compact cinema quality distribution codec.

Been testing it out and I freaking love the quality.

Ah! of course, I completely forgot about that! I thought it was more of a license. I think its something I'll be dipping my toes into later this year when I finish a short film!
(as always, a well of knowledge Phil!)

My understanding was that we would have to pay for Alchemy, Clarity, Saturation, Skin and Grain at some point down the line. I think that's a mistake since it means meta data that not everyone can open and creates inconsistencies between renderings but that's why I believe it expires periodically.

That is my understanding as well. And I think also a mistake of sorts because as it is now those features don't transfer through REDCINE-X to other applications. No support for most of it in the SDK and what appears to be the need to eventually obtain [paid?] licenses for the extras. Not really sure. I don't have an issue with RED having additional features or plugins that are a paid upgrade. I think as long as they're easy to obtain and reasonably priced it's not really an issue. And as long as when we apply an RMD to a clip and we don't have the right plug-in, we get a notice. Something like, "this look requires the Alchemy plug-in, do you wish to obtain it? Yes / No / More info".
